Momentous event cancellation and lack of refund

Epic events seem confident that Southport tri will go ahead on 16th May, so might need to do some swimming when the gym opens :grimacing:

@Poet better get training!

Isn’t Southport more duck :poop: wading rather than swimming?

Yeah, even when my daughter was studying at Edge Hill (Ormskirk) I was never tempted to race at Southport because of what I’d heard about the water quality & subsequent intestinal upsets that friends have had.

Hmm, you aren’t selling it to me

I’ve got a fairly robust constitution, love my OW swimming & rarely get problems but I’m a bit pernickety about where & when I’ll swim. I’ve mentioned before there are times The Dee is rank & I’m unlikely to enter a race in it because you can never be sure what the day will bring.

The local river can be like that depending on flow and recent rain washing rubbish down so I only go in when I think there’s low risk. The water is very dark but probably not dirty dark.

I think that marina is fairly still so germs probably linger, having said that I’ve done a few other races in minging water like Belvoir and Castle Howard.

Belvoir was an absolute joke!!!
People used to get up and run, they had Marshall’s shouting at you to swim

@stenard - sorry to drag you into this, but you’ve done Southport, what do you think?

Marine Lake “looks” nice and blue?!?

Also, @jeffb, I’m ready to pump out a quick 5km and destroy the bike leg…,not sure on the swim!

Well happy about this news

Sorry, but I cannot help but always read that as “bell-voire”. Beaver ffs.

No dogs allowed on site there, think it mentions it in the entry forms, so that’s a no from me :cross_mark:
Seems a shame to drive out there, just to go back home…and not keep going to Southport to get some chips and doughnuts.

DB Max have 51fiver on the 16th May with spaces available at South Cerney Lakes. I’m unfortunately doing it after my entry rolled over from last year and I’d entered before someone enlightened to me the percentages of swim time to bike and run time. For someone who hates swimming I quickly realised I’d made a poor choice :joy:

@sowler and @jeffB and possibly @fatbuddha

Does this mean the SWIM is going ahead???
It’s only four-ish weeks since pools opening until race day, and I thought BYF said six?
Unless they’re classing 29th March as OW training is available from :rofl::rofl:

In my case I’d presume the swim will do. Unless things really go to shit, 16th May is well after both and indoor and out facilities are scheduled to open.

A quick google suggests outdoor swim open from 29th March :man_shrugging:

two things here

  1. BTF are currently recommending 6 weeks from swim training restarting to event date but I believe current guidelines are being reviewed so they may change

  2. It doesn’t look as if DB Max are applying for a BTF permit for the 51fiver event - it’s not on the current BTF event list showing as awaiting permit (none are being permitted as yet). That means if they aren’t BTF permitted they can do effectively what they wish, provided it conforms with local guidelines and national mass participation rules. So the 6 week swim delay may not apply.

one final thing, if the event is not permitted then your BTF membership will not provide insurance cover - so check with the organiser to see what insurance cover they have in place.

Cheers!
Southport is a qualifier for the 2022 Champs, so they’ll have to have a permit, which means it’s BTF approved…which means the swim will be going ahead???

I’m actually down for the standard!

Apparently they’ve moved a pool based race by a few weeks because of restrictions but I didn’t see anything to say it was a duathlon etc

Ha ha ha - unlucky.
I really enjoy a quick sprint.
Plus the wife and dog won’t get too bored :+1:t3:

It’s pan flat, too. So all about absolute watts and not weight :+1:t3::muscle:t3:

Proper bo’ !
(Although I’m not sure I can get into the position of my avatar anymore!!!)

I was considering dropping down if they’d let me, I’ll see how things pan out but it’s going to be a lame effort from me either way!

I’m buoyed by my “no speedwork” 10km time of 38:15 :+1:t3::muscle:t3:
Plus my absolute watts on Zwift before Christmas.
Reckon I can get back to <6:00 for 400m in a matter of weeks :see_no_evil:

Looking at my 10km times…pretty sad that eight years ago I was knocking out sub-38 at 0630 as a commute to work run

The June 2019 one was a brick run, after a solid bike effort, as my final race prep before the 113.

I can get fit quick. Time to put my feet up now and think about it, then it will happen.

I’ve just remembered the bigger problem for me is the travelling, I don’t think hotels are open then? I don’t fancy a 6 hour round trip for a short race like that.

Will need to see what’s what.

I know I’m always ribbing you about this; but if we’re all still here in 10 years, I’d like to know how this goes. I’m envious
