I’ve been toying with the idea of changing my entry to Denmark 70.3, it’s late June and although I’m hoping things might be a bit more open by then with flights etc. I’m not too sure. Doesn’t look like you can defer a 70.3 to the next year (assuming it’s not cancelled and maybe if we are forbidden to travel).
Also looks like I’m down to 25% refund so that’s pointless.
I can transfer to another race this year for about £30 but the choices are limited, a lot are sold out or no interest\clash with other races.
Maastricht 70.3 does still have spaces but it’s only about 5 weeks later, and in the school holidays. But it’s a nice place and I could visit a few other places like Aachen if we are allowed.
Problem is that it’s the same weekend as our clubs 70.3, and although I can get a £30 refund ATM if Maastricht fell through I’d have nothing!
But with Maastricht I’d have the option to drive and either get the ferry from Hull or the Eurotunnel, and I would save on not getting my bike transported.
Big decisions , on the plus side I can probably have had both vaccinations by then so I might be more welcome!
Defer 70.3 to the last race on the calendar and enter club 70.3 …going abroad to race just doesn’t seem doable no certainty races will happen, travel probably restricted and quarantine imposed? Stay in uk fir best options me thinks
I still think two hopes and Bob is dead! They are already trotting out the tough autumn, new variant line and we haven’t even got to March 29th yet.
It’s like the email I got from West Ham about welcoming us all back in August. Like 60k+ people will be congregating together.
Heard today of one tri being postponed until 2022 as the local authority are not happy with mass participation events happening on their patch in July. They looked at rescheduling for September but with a crowded calendar and timing company already overstretched and committed to other events, they felt best to postpone. Not been announced to entrants yet so I can’t give the event name.
I guess a lot will be optics won’t it. What does a particular LA or council feel like they can ‘get away with’. If the area is already up on the NIMBY scale for a tri, for example, then maybe earlier this year isn’t a great idea as there is already a level of resenment.
Unless it’s a “flagship” event that provides a boost to the local economy, I get the impression that most councils only grudgingly permit triathlon and cycling events. I can’t see them granting permits if there’s any negative feeling from the locals.
The last few races are the likes of Greece and Turkey and neither are easy to get to, plus I’m still half hoping to go to the US in October.
I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet, another 5 weeks won’t make much difference but I can at least make my own way to Maastricht, so less risk I think.
@stenard might not be on your radar now after buying a new house but got an email from Boston Marathon an hour ago saying they are looking to hold an in-person race subject to authority from the state etc., but with a reduced field of 20K entries.
Same entry standards and it opens for 3 days in late April. As my qualifier was Chicago 2018 I’ll be almost 3 years older but it looks like it’s age on race day so I’ll have about 14 minutes I think.
11th October? A month after Wales if that goes ahead. End of April at least gives the chance for another 4-5 weeks to see how things continue to progress
I might have to reach out to my friends in Boston and see if I could stay. Booking non-refundable hotels in the city around marathon time would be a big cost to swallow if something went sideways.
Also going to be entering Boston, though I strongly doubt my -5:02 will be enough to get in. Have entered a marathon 2 days before that I want to go for a pb in, so could be a fun weekend if I did get in
I’m at -16:35, so just outside the first normal -20 registration window. Even with reduced entries, that’s surely got to be enough?! It’s quite funny that I was hoping to get in about 5 years ago with a -0:47!
More races getting delayed or cancelled now, the Challenge Championship has been moved back, and IM Texas has been cancelled 6 weeks out, apparently Skipper was entered and a bit gutted.
Although I got an email off Texas 70.3 which is still hoping to go ahead, different counties though.
I think the lack of absolute certainty, means that the number of events is still going to be really limited this year. Certainly stuff like Triathlon, that doesn’t just involve running across a mountainside.
