Most Overrated Piece of Training Equipment

Just see Skipper asked this on Insta and thought it was quite a good question.

his answer was lactate monitor as no one knows what to do with the data; personally I think its deeper than that, many amateurs may not even get meaningful data in the first place.

For me; Zen8, you aren’t in a real swimming position as you are “flat”, its just allowing you to lay on your front whilst pulling some bands. How about just buy some bands/stretch cords and a swiss ball and get far more use from them as they are more versatile.

Swimming trunks/jammers/cossie.

Ain’t nobody got time for swim training full stop.

On the back of your Zen8 I’ll go for all the paddling pools people set up in their gardens during lock down to try & swim while tethered to something.

Realise it was a niche moment but I don’t think it helped anyone’s swimming.

Surely that would just be ’ a pool’ then? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Form goggles.

Expensive to buy
Expensive ongoing subscription
Wear out quickly and need replacing
Don’t really add anything that the already existing pace clock/sports watch don’t ***

There are more useless things, but these are contender as so highly rated/promoted/sponsored.

** I’ve never actually worn them and don’t know if the technique features are any good. That may be a redeeming feature but wasn’t letting that get in the way of a rant.

yep, of course, i also forgot the no expense spared photo shoot…

So, tri box along with over priced/hyped coaches…

Alphaflys.

They are obviously a benefit to most but the hype is overwhelming. In a five hour marathon they might save me 12 minutes. Big whoop. Or I could have five pairs of decent running shoes to rotate through weekly training.

Don’t let petty details get in the way of a good rant!

What about gps watches. Has owning one made you faster or is it looking at Hammerers point and knowing how to interpret the data being the key?

I’m going to say yes, when I was a bit more focused it helped me keep the pace and time on reps.

Nah, I think they’re good. Motivating to see things like weekly distance, average pace, can use them for intervals all of which make you a better athlete.

The point is, it’s the training which makes you better / stronger / faster, not the equipment (other than aero).

Comfy shoes help
Data can help
Fancy bike helps

But if you don’t use them, they’re pointless

maybe not taking a clean sample? maybe not knowing a suitable protocol, not warming up long enough.

The anxiety I would get from not knowing how far I would have ran or cycled would be too much for me to handle.

Before they existed I drove the routes I ran to know the distance.

you still get meaningful data (except where the sample is compromised in some way, but that happens every now and then regardless)
