Novice swimmer qualifies for IMWC

At Bolton?

It’s laudable what IM is doing to try to get parity at the WCs, but it kind of devalues the achievement of getting to the WC if pretty much any woman who wants to go can get a slot.

I’m not sure it helps anyone if a big chunk of the WC field misses cut-offs :man_shrugging:

It’s actually quite a nice, positive story in the article but only four have used the link.

How do you expect us to make our uninformed and prejudiced rants if we had actually followed the link and read the article ?

I read it & silently judged her.

The fact she wants to be interviewed and says:

“The World Championships is a chance for me to show the world what I’ve really got.”

After that performance was enough for me to see it as another social media influencer. Sure enough, also went viral for her stories on soulful sunrises and cold water swimming saving her life during that trend

Isn’t that normal though, to take your socks off before swimming the channel? Heck, I take mine off before an oly or even a sprint.

She’s on the upwards slope, good luck to her & hope she has a blast. Perhaps WC slots are more achievable in some age groups, but I don’t think an IM is ever easy.

Well that wasn’t the case at Bolton. The women had I think 65 slots for 80 odd finishers.

You’ve just got to finish and have the spare cash…

Yeah, just meant that finishing an IM isn’t usually easy. How many F20-24s even try?

Just happy for her, sounds like a nice story & hope she enjoys it. We need the young uns to do it to keep the sport alive

She finished 7th out of 7 in her AG.

It’s a nice story and the bit about the broken seat adds a bit of drama to the endeavour. It would have been a great IMJ story if it had stopped with the IM finish, but the WC qualification grates a bit for those of us who remember when getting to Kona was a genuinely difficult thing to do in any AG.

I could be wrong, but I suspect she probably won’t be in the sport for the long haul. The bit about her 35,000 social media followers makes me think she might be moving on to something else for likes once this is done :man_shrugging:

Yeah I can see that too. The cost of WC now seems crazy expensive to me, I can really understand how many people can’t justify such an expensive sweaty holiday. And why there are such big roll downs.

For the record, if the person in question visits TT, my main view is 1. well done for completing 1st IM (which is always a big achievement I think) and 2. sorry for the trotter shots

I’ve neither read the story or made a judgement but here’s my opinion anyways :grinning:

If she’s having fun and has the money (or parents) to fund more fun then :+1:

If that devalues the WC surely that’s down to IM and their rules and not her playing within those rules?

Swap one obsession for another; compulsive behaviour.

What do you mean? IM Riyadh in December is a banker.

not sure it devalues WC, but it is certainly indicative of a changing scenery in the sport…

All the new BTF branding has “inclusive” written on it…without any hint of irony…
