Open water swim season starting

Hadn’t planned this morning’s swim, but after an evening on the gin I woke up to a message from a mate who was going along :grimacing:

Loved it. This morning’s swim was the first time this season that I’ve enjoyed it rather than endured :smiley:.

Still can’t seem to transfer pool pace to the OW, but ticked off 2500mtrs.

I was sat on the beach with the youngest looking out at the sea which was like a lake. Saw a good few people swimming up and down, and was very jealous. :pensive:

Not that you guys down south need them with your barmy hot spring waters, but Zone3 are doing 30% off if anyone needs socks/gloves.

Water was decent down here last night, as per Bob’s point! :joy:

I’d say it feels a fair bit warmer than this time last year. I was in for 40 mins last night, could’ve easily taken that to an hour. Hands were a bit tingly in the shower after, but on the whole it was good.

Stunning being in at sunset though. Such awesome light streaming in through the water as you swim. Though sighting the little ‘speed’ buoys (maybe a foot diameter) into the sun was nigh on impossible. There was a really gentle rolling swell as well, just big enough to totally obstruct the buoys! Good practice though.

Nothing on your guys, but air temp was 7C when I got in for my swim this morning. Open air pool not heated overnight so fairly chilly for first half hour while the heating kicks in. Only one more outdoor pool swim left for me, ‘winter’ is coming.

I’m booked in for Thursday.
Currently 15°, which is Baltic for me :cold_face:

Our place was 14 last Monday, 16 on Friday and 17.5 last night so there’s still hope.

17.5 is delicious :+1:t3::heart_eyes:
It’s just rained a lot here with a massive breeze.
It’s not warm or sunny tomorrow either.
But…the lake is shallow so a day of sun really superheats the top layer :fire:

What sort of water temperature do you guys tend to stop with the wetsuit?

Ive never swam open water without one. Im a wimp about cold water. I could probably force myself at about 22/23.

Of course you can acclimatise to colder water

My local was 22.5 on Saturday, I’d imagine it’s warmed up further since.

I almost went skins and most definitely will for my next dip

Scotland = wettie
Caribbean = mankini

Simplistic but surprisingly accurate.

I was in the river tonight, it was quite warm in the wettie, but I’d only say 20 at best with a few hot & cold patches.

Jumped in after without it and it felt colder, but possibly because I’d already warmed up.

Noticeable the reduction in buoyancy though!

I’d wear one regardless just for safety - partic out in Loch. Do go out quite far now

I’ve been going without when it’s over 20.
Tho I’m much more likely if the air temp is decent, don’t want to feel cold coming out (tho it’s arguably easier to get in).

I’d encourage everyone to join the gimp swim skin posse… Best of both worlds.

Yeah, I generally following the shore line as the lochs I swim are generally deserted - and there’s the added bonus of the water being above 10 degrees :cold_face:

If the wife is out paddleboarding then I’ll draft her and throw in some occasional sprints to try and catch and tip her off :laughing:

A lot of selfies today in a variety of outfits I see

24.5 in the lake this evening. Planning on using the wetsuit but will it be too hot? I’ve never swam in these temperatures!

My local was 23.7 last Friday and I didn’t bother - it was lovely just in speedos. I’m so much slower but enjoyed the novelty

Was tempted to go back to that twat lake near Northampton but having told the organiser to fuck off I imagine I’m not welcome back

(Paying to swim in one direction round a bit of a reservoir surrounded by dicks in kayaks - seriously - where are the hazards other than the twat with the paddle lamping you - fuck off)
