Open water swim season starting

list of places I’m never swimming :open_mouth::shark:

https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/maps/world/

edit: wait, what? 3 in UK.

bit more research: “Only one incident was fatal, involving a swimmer in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, in 1922.”

@Poet @jeffb / other northern types, best be sticking to duathlon I reckon

I think the sewage will be a bigger risk in the sea and there’s plenty of surfers for them to feast on :joy:

COLC has raised it’s ugly, greedy head at my local OW swim spot. The proposed charges for this year are £6 swim & £3 parking which was always free.

It’s a lovely spot with water that is generally good & clean…but it’s only open set hours, a rough 10min walk from car to the water, there are no secure changing facilities apart from a few benches & a couple of portaloos & no accurately placed buoys.

Unfortunately this year it’ll be the Dee of Death & Hanmer for me.

Our council were talking about charging for parking where we go, but people will probably just park on the estate opposite.

Hardly encouraging exercise as people also SUP etc

Maybe they’ll just charge the plebs in the main car park and leave the overflow or free on an evening.

Otherwise there’s alternatives upstream

The owners said on FB last night that they have to pay tax on swim charges, but car parking is VAT free.

As you say people will just clog up the local roads/residential areas to avoid parking charges…shows how lazy I am nowadays, during lockdown I’d happily cycle there :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:  .

Amazing swim. Kudos too to the BBC for telling it like it is:

He didn’t pass respectfully but cautiously through the natural ocean habitat of the endangered marine species Carcharodon carcharias, under cover of darkness.

oh no.

He swam through GREAT WHITE SHARK INFESTED WATERS AT NIGHT :scream:.

There was a good chat/interview with an IM Talk podcast listener who recently swam the Cook Straight on their podcast about a month or so ago. I’m so impressed by people who do those marathon swims.

You should look up Susy Maroney, she is the sister of Mick, an infamous tri coach in Sydney. The whole family are fish!

It’s not the sharks you need to worry about, it’s the orcas

I assume he was just making it clear to all of us who might’ve been worried that he was taking appropriate precautions with the sea urchins.

I had some urchin in my foot for 20 odd years through failing to take such precautions, so I applaud his sense.
