Yup. Tried that.
They still disintegrate.
Pork pies are indestructible. And taste better
Cool story bro; I once ate a chorizo scotch egg in 28° prior to a Peak District climb (Abney Gliding Club from Hathersage) during a 260km ride.
I nearly barfed going up that hill
So I now stay well clear of anything remotely spicy
(The scotch egg cake in a cardboard wrapper, too. Water that day was from home, churches, home, schools, AlpKit, home, churches etc …)
Have run and driven up that hill but not on a bike … must add to the list
Back in my Norseman days, one of the challenges on the run was to make sure to avoid all the weird food on the two or three feed stations on the run. In 2008 I had one slice of salami as I set off onto the final mountain section (about 3 miles to the finish) and it nearly did for me.
I did have really bad EIA as well but not being able to breathe and thinking you’re going to puke is a very poor combination of symptoms
Just back from the Cycle Show at the NEC today. One company (https://weareogt.com/) was doing energy-bar stuff coated in edible beeswax so you could carry it in your pocket without wrappers. Some good flavours:
Honeycomb
Lemon Drizzle
Cherry Bakewell
Banoffee
Apple & Cinnamon
Salted Caramel
Strawberries & Cream
Rhubarb & Custard
Carob & Orange protein
Carob & Orange oat
Stuff smelled slightly of floor polish but tasted OK as far as energy bars go. Sold in bulk cardboard boxes.
Not sure if the beeswax thing is something you could replicate at home on home-baked or shop-bought products?
Since reading this in June '24 I’ve developed a love for daily dates & a look at my purchase history tells me I’ve got through 17kgs .
Also a fan of dates. The locals really love 'em, but there’s a lot of tooth decay in kids- I wonder if the 2 things are linked? Is there a dentist in the house? Oh no, of course, they’re in Kona
A plastic free bike ride?
That’ll be a steel framed bike and hand-knitted woollen kit
(ETA when my mum and dad raced their bikes in the 50s, they wore club jerseys that my mum had knitted for them )
I bet your dad is glad he wasn’t a swimmer.
Or a skydiver
