That’s my kind of cycling for 14 years!
I bought a second hand wheel in 2007, that lasted until about 5 years ago.
I bought a second wheel in 2010, it was upgraded to wireless G3 in 2016 - it’s been very lightly used since then
Third wheel was a bit more pricy - powertap built into a carbon rim to replace the original second hand wheel. This has been my wheel of choice on the summer bike. I got the winter/commute bike with disc brakes in 2017, hence the second wheel has barely been used
My Powertap Pro+ from 2009 is still going strong. It’s had one bearing service and needs new batteries about once a year but other than that it’s been faultless. Bit heavy though, and might be on its way out as I need to convert the bike it’s on from 10 to 11 speed sometime and I’ll have to decide whether to get an 11 speed freehub for it or swap to something a bit more modern!
SRAM announced last week that they are closing down the Powertap part of their business
Powertap is what I have. Can’t really fault it. Great bit of kit.
Have they issued a new update since the DCR post I read? In that, he said they were ceasing sale of the existing powertap lineup, but that their position on acquisition holds, and that new PT hub and pedal products should be coming in the future.
Ah I just read something on Twitter. I defer to DCRainmaker I’m sure he knows much more than I do!
I upgraded mine to 11 speed - it was wired originally so probably more of an issue than for you (assuming I remember correctly that the Pro+ was wireless back in 2009?).
If you get it done alongside a bearing change it will probably not be very expensive
Even though SRAM are discontinuing the PT products CPM will be continuing to service all of the PT products for a few years yet.
I think I am having an issue with my P2M Classic on Zwift.
I seem to be yoyoing and find it difficult to keep a steady pace when riding with others.
Current setup up on Zwift is P2M doing the power and cadence and Elite Direto as a controllable trainer.
I swapped to use the Direto in Zwift as the power source then recorded the P2M on my Garmin for the same ride.
Overlaid it in Zwift Power, zoomed into a section and got this……
Purple is Direto and blue is P2M.
It doesn’t look normal to me and could explain the yoyoing when using the P2M in Zwift.
Anyone else seen this kind of thing?
Think @stenard used to have the same setup?
Hey - yes, I had the same (P2M and Direto) before my Direto died.
That’s the same I saw when my Direto got sent back as faulty, and I got refunded. Are you feeling smooth resistance from the Direto, and so would you say that the power2max power data “feels wrong”, or do you think the P2M is correctly reflecting a pulsing from the resistance unit?
In my case, the belt snapped, Elite were great and sent me a new one really fast, I replaced it, but as soon as I did I was getting graphs like the above. I was able to clearly feel the resistance “pulsing”. So if I was in erg mode, holding steady watts, it was hugely noticeable that the trainer was no longer providing a consistent resistance. The resistance would “pulse”. I had numerous emails with them, and eventually they said they didn’t know and to return to the retailer and get a refund. I’d had it for about 18 months. Not sure if the belt snap (which was an 800w sprint) caused something to get hit internally which damaged a circuit board or something.
I did quite a bit of testing:
Not the easiest to see, but this was a “before and after” of 2min intervals. The top one was before the belt change when things were fine. The bottom two are after. You can see similar “pulsing” of the P2M power (the graph scaling doesnt help), which I could tell myself was a reflective of reality, as I could tell I didn’t have a stable resistance provided by the trainer.
The second was what I think was evidential of a trainer issue (again, before and after screenshots). The pulsing in the power that the P2M could pick up was not significant enough to dramatically affect cadence. But the cadence stream from the Direto was a complete mess, reflecting the pulsing that was going on in the unit, that was then impacting the algorithms that estimate cadence. This was compelling evidence for me (and Elite I think) that there was something wrong with the trainer
Thanks @stenard
When I think about it maybe it does pulsate so the P2M is reflecting that.
I will jump on tonight and give it a test now you have said that and try and get a feel as to what it is doing.
Also will have a look back at some older session to see what the graphs look like for me.
How did you manage to get a refund from the retailer after the 12 months warranty had passed?
Also how often did you calibrate your Direto?
Don’t know if it’s changed with Brexit, but EU warranty was always 2 years anyway. I don’t understand why people referred to 1 year warranties being normal as they weren’t legal.
Never, only after the belt change. I always used my P2M as the power source, and used things like powermatch in trainerroad to just get the Direto to match my power meter
If you do your testing and you think it’s similar to what I’ve described, contact Elite. They were good initially, then got a little wishy washy, but I kept hassling them and sending graphs such as the above demonstrating the device was no longer working properly, and eventually they sent me a message saying “please return to your retailer for a replacement”.
At that point I contacted the retailer, who didn’t really have a leg to stand on given the manufacturer was the one telling me to get a replacement. And they knew they’d be able to get refunded themselves from Elite. As they didn’t have any further stock (due to lockdown shortages) their only other option was a full refund.
Thanks @stenard I appreciate that
Anyone else done the Assioma firmware update, and can’t connect to the Right pedal in the App as a result? I did the Left update, it went into Bootload, did it’s thing, but hasn’t connected to the Right pedal since, so I haven’t updated that yet.
I was losing my shit, then saw on my devices & Zwift all was seemingly normal. I also got dual readings in Connect afterwards 🤷
It was a bit fiddly on mine, did the left pedal and it took a while to reconnect, possibly rebooting the pedal
It then took a while before finally seeing the right pedal and offering to upgrade that.
Got there eventually though.
I’ll have another go later.
Finally lubed my chain too! Just need to re-index the gears so I can get the smallest sprocket again.
Sorted. It informed me they had different Firmware this time, then let me Bootload the Right pedal. All is in equilibrium once more.
Replacement spindle of power arrived from Assioma yesterday. 5min job to take out U/S one & fit new one.
Tested out this morning & all is right with the world again.
Has anyone done a bearing change on an Assioma? My left pedal is getting a bit grumbly.
