And Spainish???
Probably trying to inhale the PEDs (too controversial? ) Sorry I was thinking Pog (sh1t sorry did it again.)
This will be a really fascinating study. The difficult part is getting the design right.
A car airbag detonates on the carâs impact therefore has the delay between the car impacting and the bodyâs inertia towards the steering wheel. Its deployment time is part of the deceleration of the body.
A cyclist hitting the ground is basically the impact. Deploying an airbag at that point is too late. It will have to work on sensors for change in position of the rider or the sudden rolling movement of the riders body. Which could lead to some interesting false detonations at times. Also, airbag detonators are hideously powerful things, Iâd hate to have one going off near my skin.
I might have a look at how much funding the UCI are putting behind this. No doubt some Dutch university will already have their proposal ready to go.
On a motorcycle leathers systemâŠ
Detection Systems:
Electronic (Wireless): Systems like Alpinestars Tech-Air and Dainese D-air use 6-7 sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes, and sometimes GPS) to analyze movement 1,000 times per second, detecting crashes, highsides, or lowside incidents.
Mechanical (Tethered): A physical cable connects the vest to the bike, triggering inflation if the rider is thrown.
Iâd imagine itâs quite a heavy system. Not relative to bike leathers but for a cyclist, theyâll definitely feel it. I wonder how light theyâll be able to go.
Presumably this will use similar technology to the inflatable commuter helmets
This one says 2kg, but I guess they could half that? Looks a bit hot for a an hour climb up alps duez in 40°c baking sun.
The rules will probably be like the old days of helmet choice. You didnât have to wear a helmet if it was a summit finish.
Airbags have been mandatory in downhill and super g skiing for the last year or two, probably similar technology as would be needed for cycling (but with fewer concerns about it being too hot!)

Well hopefully they donât use Garminâs collision detect to trigger it, or it will go off when tou stop at a junction.
The old helmet rule was that you could discard it in a designated zone at the bottom of the last climb on an uphill finish.
I assume this is envisioned as something that would be worn under the normal racing jersey, so not easy to discard ![]()
Probably stating the obvious, but cycling is a bit different from skiing and motorsport, where a crash is the end of a race.
In a bike race, if you crash mid stage would you have to then replace your airbag before you could continue?
Some riders hit the deck multiple times and still ride to the finish ![]()
Perhaps itâs easier if the all wear sumo suits ( obviously the mountain classification will have a mr blobby suit).
Then they are not disadvantaged if they continue after a crash.
I assumed this was for track cycling where a crash is game over anyway.
In the bunch races on the track, crashed riders usually get a replacement bike and get back into the race. I think they usually get laps out
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but a friend recommended Tiz-cycling.
The live streams get overwhelmed so not worth it but then the put up

Mads Pederson on recovering from his broken wrist & collarbone..
âI couldnât wipe my own ass, man! My left wrist was broken, and I was in a cast up to my elbow. And my right collarbone was broken, so it was in a sling. I couldnât poop for five days. It was a tough birth when I finally could again.â
Fark me, Iâm getting bored of UAE Postal dominance and one rider in particular. Anyway Strada Bianca today reminded me of our holidayâŠ
I think I read that Paris-Nice starts tomorrow?
Just checked, it does.
Yeah I switched it on the minute he got a gap, immediately switched it off.
Nice, Iâm off there in a May for some gravel riding.
