Ah thanks. Been out of loop.

That is horrific. That’s probably around a 50mph impact.

Statement from IM just released. Sad day for everyone who is involved I’m torn between what was right to continue the race or stop it. Hard to say but think if I was competing I would probably want to continue with the race but the lack of communication from IM on live streaming is shocking.

I totally get that people might sadly die during a race, eg heart attacks in the swim etc, and you might get the odd racing incident that leads to a bike crash, but the moto looks like they’re miles across the road.

Odd the driver has died but the pillion and cyclist are so far still alive.

Hard to call for stopping the race, easier said than done.

Commentators at the time said it was a moto / moto crash despite what is very clearly lots of bike being obliterated all over the road.

Fucking head on collision for fucks sake - race directors in the shit here and whoever signed off on that many motos on course - what’s the AGer supposed to do? Lucky to be alive goddammit

Motorcyclist was 70 according to Reuters. Only fact shared and would seem to be relevant to both the error and the survivability.

7:26 is rapid, and a 2:31 run :flushed: do you think Brownlee could run that fast these days?

Not pro but Paul Lunn went sub 9 to win M50 off a 64 minute swim! That’s pretty impressive

Was that with a shortened bike?

Not sure the bike or run were full distance TBH.

I’ll see if the lad I follow uploads his race

150-170km bike and 38-40km run.

Like I said elsewhere.

The AG who was taken out is in hospital with a broken back.

He’s one of the athletes on my Ironman training thread over on TR. fuck.

Nope, the lad I know uploaded a 178k bike and run was only about 600m short. And transition is massive

Noice :white_check_mark::heart_eyes::clap:t3:

That’s about as good as it gets for long distance.

Frodo and Amberger have made statements on their Instas - saying all the things you’d expect

Josh, yes. Jan, not at all. He makes no critical comments whatsoever. He’s toeing the Ironman-party line and loses all respect from me.

This is utterly outrageous. Seeing that footage, and having passed many a pro in a race with motos nearby, I feel sick at how this can happen to someone just going about their race. The race director should be prosecuted for allowing that situation to occur.

Fair comment, I read Amberger’s post after Frodeno’s

Thinking about me, as a moto rider who is an ATGATT kind of guy, how on earth do you die from hitting a cyclist. At 70 years old, there has to be something else in play, either that or he landed under his bike, hard.
Looking at the footage, yes he’s going faster than the other motos but he’s hardly pinning it to the stops and if the other motos are going what 40kph to keep up with the lead athletes, then he can’t be doing more than 70kph.
I can imagine how the cyclist might die but not the moto pilot?
