Strava

“We’re reaching out to let you know that starting March 16, 2026 , Strava will begin ending support for Facebook login and suggesting Facebook friends.”

Ive had no end of problems here supporting facebook login, not sure it even works anymore as I gave up as I had to prove I was a VAT registered business to have it…erm I’m not its a “hobby site” . Every year I had to update some part of the T&C or another to comply also. I’m guessing Strava has just given up!

Interesting. Any idea why they are doing that? Surely it can’t just be hassle factor?

Cost probably?

:man_shrugging:

What, as in facebook charge to use login by facebook? Maybe but I wondered it was more to do with protecting data, the data Strava and Garmin are sitting on must be a proper goldmine :man_shrugging:

Maybe each time you log on that way a little of it leaks towards Zuck?? No idea though

I would be surprised if Meta weren’t charging them a fee for using their logon

no its free, its just an API. I actually recon it is that they don’t want to comply with some of the silly rules or share login data, maybe they are concerned with the new rules of “fora”, security and data protection with all the bots. FB make you amend “contracts” and T&C’s and for a company as big as Strava with the data they have probably don’t want to comply with any of that.

I think with the US the way they are and all the Chinese involvement, the market is ripe for a Eurobook, Eurotweet, EuroSnap and Eurozoom type thing so its fully GDPR and known not to have any outside influences or be controlled by US authorities. EU laws are so much more stringent also about content and advertising

maybe one for another thread as way off topic

As hammerer says Facebook are actually a massive authentication platform beyond their own services as it offloads a lot of high security processes and keeping it secure.

I wasn’t sure if there was charge, more likely T&C’s and if Strava authenticate themselves it seems pointless supporting multiple platforms.

They’re mad into padel here. The expats that is. I’m not sure what it is… some kind of naff tennis or summin’.

I’ve seen various places offering it and some people uploading it to Strava as a general exercise.

I think hiring a court is quite expensive as well.

I suspect there are a fair few walks in that. (at least 48  )

Know nothing about it but anything that “posh farm shop in Cotswolds” thinks is a sport to diversify into suggests it’s pretty expensive yes!

Loads of padel centres opening up around London. There was a pop-up padel court by Marble Arch over the summer a couple of years ago.

I think it’s like a cross between tennis and squash

Yeha it’s one of the fastest growing sports I believe.

Without being too much of a douche, I think it’s seen as genuinely being more accessible than tennis etc in terms of ability as its a bit easier for beginners.

But of course, where there’s demand then supply will readily fill the gaps and empty rhe pockets!

If you are being unkind you would say it’s tennis without the running around, because there is a wall around the court. But I think the big attraction is people at different levels can play against each other without it being a complete disaster for one or the other. Cannot do that with tennis.

If you’re terrible at racquet sports like me, in tennis most rallies are 1 or 2 shots and you spend 80% of the game walking around fetching balls that you missed and are now miles away.

At least in padel and squash, the ball can’t run away. So they are much less demoralising.

Padel was big where we lived last year, there were courts all over the place & even a couple of courts on our compound. The doubles game was especially popular.
