Mixing it up a bit. Instead of my usual weights routine, I’m gunna try doing more functional stuff.
So today was 3 rounds of
500m Row
40m Sled push
40m Farmers walk.
500m Ski erg
15 x Wall balls
40m lunges ( barbell over shoulders )
F*cked!!!

Nice !
Sled weight ?
Nice to see a proper workout on here !
( I’ll just get back under my bridge … before anyone suggests posting on my hyrox site I’m err… on a 2 week “ exclusion” for my quite forthright views on those cheating drug taking bastids” )
Tri forever !!
All this talk of 1RM is getting me excited to get back into strength training. Big bonus of this new gaff if I get it is I still have a garage for my power rack.
Doing stuff like 5x5 is so much easier with your own kit and not having to worry about how busy the gym is.
I think a good target for next year is 1xBW on bench and 1.5x on squat.
Started with 30kg on the shed but my Achilles weren’t happy ( first time I’ve ever done this ) so I reigned in my ego and pushed it empty. Didn’t fancy an injury on my first attempt. I’ll build it up as I get used to the exercise. I’m in reasonably good shape but not strong at all ( I’m 67kg ) so I’m not being too hard on myself.
Enjoyed it and will be doing it once a week through winter at least.
On the subject of Hyrox I noticed our friend Joe Skipper has been training for it. Posted on his ‘gram…
Strange that I’m “ nursing my left ankle/ Achilles ” at the moment yet it doesn’t seem to be bothered by the sled at all total weight today was 125 kg 55 m with a big stop every 11 m, it just comes with practice
Was talking to a lad in the bubbles today that is racing on sat ( he went 1:45 two weeks ago in brum) he’s big mates with age group elite super Tom Rigby and said “ he might win it” anyone who can do an opening 5k in a duathlon in 16:01 and then ride at silly speeds is obviously a very good runner but he wouldn’t win it ( pros)
And neither would Joe skipper, I’m guessing they would both win/ podium there age groups, (would no average Joe want to race the unpaid athletes ?!)but some very very fast ( very muscular, don’t get me ducking started, ) runners out there too.
He’s probably doing pairs as a bit of fun ? I’ll look out for him the weekend
He’s going in the pro category. He’s currently chatting about it online. His shed push on the video is 185kg which is insane given his build and weight.
I would love him to win !
The world champ “ the sherif “ is not racing, this is a near 15 stone man who repeatedly runs 3:30 kms in between skiing and rowing within 3% of the British Olympic rowing team, pushing a 200 kg ( 202 is the pro weight ) like it’s a Tesco trolley
Sprinting on the farmers walk with 10.5 stone in his hands and his party piece is 100 unbroken wall balls ( 9 kg ) time and time again
Of course he’s clean !
Seriously I have no idea, and there is no evidence to suggest he’s a cheat.
He’s an exceptionally fit guy ftp is 402 I think ?!
Come on joe!!!
In my opinion it does. I’ve noticed myself when getting near the top end weight you focus more on the weight and can easily forget the basics eg taking a big breath and bracing, and then your form goes to shit and you can easily injure yourself. Let alone most peoples form is less than great doing 1RMs. I’ve sacked off 1RMs completely now. And will only do 3s.
I’m surprised Skipper has gone straight into the Pro category, will be interesting to see how he does. I would love to go and watch him but he’s on at 9pm (awful time!) and I’m competing the next day so I’ll be in bed! Someone needs to bark at him!
@Mungo2 Hunter is racing at 7:30 in mens double with the Represent 24/7 guy. Probably cos he’s sponsored by them. Literally about 70% of blokes there seem to be wearing some of that gear!
He’s put out that he’s racing with one of his sponsors, seen a few of those represent t shirts I prefer assos casual and boxing tops at my age.
We are stuck on M1.
I think we will be staying to watch Joe.
He’s probably a better runner than most of the pros but he will be miles behind on some of the stations.
Hour?
I have always found taking in a big breath is a very natural thing to do when lifting heavy. i would go as far as to say it is instinctive.
It’s anaerobic, no need to breathe.
🏋🏻♂️
I am sure you all know I meant inhale and hold that in as you lift heavy, then exhale.
Joking aside I think it’s better the other way around when you’re lifting really heavy
Lungs empty during lift, breathe after
What benefit is there to empty lungs when lifting?
Holding the breath in means increased intra-thoracic and abdominal pressure and helps stabilise the spine. I mean for heavy lifting specifically not easy to moderate lifts.
I can’t recall, admittedly. Something to do with the pressure on a deep breath on a massive lift iirc.
There have been differences in the way people are told to lift heavy. Some say you should inhale as you lower the weight and exhale as you lift. The reason behind this was to minimise the blood pressure from spiking too high. That risk was overblown.
The other side of it is for people to perform the valsalva maneuver, where you breathe out against a closed glotis which creates the pressure, along with a braced core, to keep the spine and everything straight. Thats why people wear belts for really heavy lifting. To push against the belt to increase the pressure even more. As it happens a valsalva maneuver lowers blood pressure anyway.
how do you exhale keeping the mouth and nose closed - through your ears or arse?? #confused
I’m not buying this.
What’s the story here (not on the thread, but your profile in general).
Tell us a bit about yourself?
Ok.
So, again, tell us about yourself?
but you can’t exhale with your mouth and nose closed!
