what no squats ![]()
Personally I dont subscribe to that. DLs hit the legs massively. They do hit the lats a little but not that much. In a PPL split I would always put DLs in with Legs. Plenty of people do put them in the Pull.
Suppose it doesnt really matter unless you do Pull and Legs on consecutive days in which case the DLs should really be in Legs
I do a bit of a hybrid (in a perfect week) where I do PPL Tue, Wed, Thur then a variation of Push & Pull on Sat & Sun (which I call CST & LBB) with Deadlifts on Sunday to add some Leg work on that day.
Well, I didnāt quite go that far but I was walking like John Wayne and both calves cramped up when I got out of the van at home ![]()
Bit down on everything, as youād expect after a month off, bailed after 6x120kg on Squats.
Finally taken my squat to 125 kg 1RM at 80 kg bw. It was 112 about 8 months ago. Been working on my strict/military press for Athx which is 10 RM. Hoping I can scrape 50-52.5 for 10.
Deadlift and bench need some work, but stress and working on the ergs and my running as well so canāt be doing it all!
Felt decent on the bench this morning, 8x100kg, 4x110kg didnāt feel too bad so thought Iād go for another PB whilst Iād got jnr to spot for me.
1x130kg done and even felt like I could go a couple kg more but Iāll save that for another day.
Ps. If I donāt get my arse into gear Iām in danger of benching more than I squat or deadlift ![]()
I keep getting so close to PBs on my lifts and then something gets in the way, week off, deload go again.
Had last week off because of various reason. Was ready to get back on it but if youve been the injury thread youll see my hand is buggered and I wont be able to grip a heavy barbell for a while.
Been struggling with a bit of motivation the last couple of weeks and missing sessions for fairly pathetic reasons.
Decided I need a change and cut down the number of sessions over the summer when thereās more to do at weekends/evenings etc.
Been weighing up all the various plans and settled on giving Stronglifts 5x5 another go. It fits the criteria above, you guys seem to like it and it will give my Squat/Deadlift a bit more attention, which is where Iām lagging a bit.
In Birmingham tomorrow and having a tooth out Thursday so probably wonāt get going this week but see how I feel come Monday.
I actually started back on that a couple months back, but not being consistent enough the last 2 weeks. It was easy to follow but as its what Iām trained to do, I am about to start modifying as I personally think we should alternate squat and dead session by session and not do both in the same session, one of which, the one we do least, is compromised. Do need to think of an alternative pull for that day though, maybe DB flys, or DB single arm rows although neither are meeting the compound criteria fully though.
Thatās always been one of my stumbling blocks with it and am tempted to do the same.
In terms of a Pull exercise; Barbell Row is effectively a horizontal pull, so alternating with a vertical pull like Pull-ups or Lat Pulldowns would seem ideal.
How many times a week are you squatting and deadlifting and to what percentage of your 1RM?
In an ideal week I squat during leg session on Thursdays and deadlift during LBB session on Sundays but Iāve been a bit hit and miss with the Thursdays.
I donāt do 1RMs on those exercises as Iām a bit too worried about injuries but my best sets are ususally something like 4x130/140kg on Squats and 4x140/150kg on Deadlifts which I would say is pretty close to failure, maybe 1/2 reps in reserve but they would be a struggle and form would probably go.
I donāt test 1RM as a metric thereās too much risk V reward except with the most experienced lifters
I just started on the SL 5*5plan from the start at 20kg bar only and building up
3 times a week , 3 x squats and 1 or 2 times DL in those weeks
last two weeks lthough I went once both weeks
Ive just built up slowly, Squats are at 60kg the next time I go for 5 * 5, DL is 75 for 1 * 5
Squats are starting to smart a bit last couple of times on the 5 rep of set 4 and 4/5 of set 5
Heavy squats and deads can be quite taxing on the CNS. Sometimes its better to go for volume in a cycle than low reps and big weight. I wouldnāt be doing them both twice a week especially if I was doing hard running or bike sessions as well!
Thats fair on the 1RM I was just trying to see what percentage you were working off. I quite like 3RM for testing as you can always sack off the third rep if form is starting to go to shit and your prawning a deadlift
The thing to remember with Stronglifts is its about getting newbies up to a standard. Early on the volume is so low that Squats and DLs wont impact each other. Once you get to a point they are having an impact you should move to a different plan that has less squatting in.
Im considering a 3 day PPL split or a new variation on a 2 day āSLā type thing as said above moving Dl to 5*5 on day 2 instead of squats and adding another pull, pulldowns sound good but the machines are on the other side of the gym, so may use DBās and target the 3 main back muscles with reverse fly or/and single arm rows
Ive also already adapted to add some skull crushers/curls as a 4th exercise, just 3 * though.
Had the tooth out yesterday, went as well as can be expected I suppose.
Advised no strenuous exercise for a couple of days and Iām living on jelly, Angel Delight and protein shakes so weak as a kitten anyway.
Think Iāll give it the weekend and then try a M,W,F full body split, similar to SL5x5 but with the odd tweak.
Well itās July tomorrow so looks like my half year target has gone.
Itās only Dealdifts I missed and I might have made it if I hadnāt been so inconsistent over the last couple of months (couple of holidays, tooth out, general laziness etc.)
Not too fussed, Iāll keep ticking over for the rest of the summer then try and have a proper go come September with a bulk/strength block to see if I can get to the June taregts initailly then my longer term BW ones.
Im still following my modified SL 5 x 5, been around 3 months with odd bit of inconsistency, normally 2 sessions a week, sometimes 3,
squats are at 67.5kg today
bench is at 57.5 today
rows are at 57.5today
the other set is
deads do 3 * 5 , 80kg on wednesday
shoulder press another go at 37.5
db reverse flyās are at 2 * 12kg dumbells / pull downs will be 5 *5 at 60kg next
Iāve a history of shoulder issues (swimming no doubt) so struggle with OHP and the flies also (which are mainly back but seem to struggle still. Will come though
The deads are also a bit of a struggle due to my height, but will be at BW before too long.
Iām on a 4 week down tools order after my procedure.
Had been skirting round the 90kg on squats, was over 100kg on DLs and >60kg on bench/row.
Really want to get to 1.2BW on squats and 1.5 on DL and close to 1 on bench and row. Think thatās achievable by end of the year. Will ease back in from August.
