Any idea how I can access the archived sub-10 thread?
The link at the top of this thread goes to 404 and I can’t find the thread on the archive site. Search also goes to 404 as does trying to click through the pages.
Blimey a young thruster in the ranks
The archive is a little suspect at times, links don’t always work. Someone on here I think wrote loads down from it I think. I also have notes somewhere
That might be me. I’ve got a document (word or PDF) that’s got about 20 pages of stuff that I cut and pasted from the original ‘award winning’ thread. I’ve also got my race report from when I first went sub 10 that references a lot of what I learned from that thread. Most of what I know about racing fast (ish) came from the hours I spent reading that thread start to finish.
Happy to post it here, it’s all others people’s ideas and content (not sure if that’s a legal issue?) - @Hammerer what’s the best way for me to do this - just cut and paste the whole lot into a post or try and make a link to my document.
You could link, or create pdf, if under 4mb it should attach (like a picture does) as I just enable uploads of pdf.
Nope, it isn’t ![]()

Here you go. Enjoy!
Couldn’t find my own sub 10 report but there should be plenty here for you.
Lot of wisdom from names from the past: Nobbie, Russ cox, and Joe Skipper (whilst he was still around these parts), @funkin and @Toyota_Crown (still present) too.
That remains my whole tri education, spent months reading through sub-10 and several other of the old TT1 threads!
Lucky you managed to squeeze some training in with all that reading
I feel honoured to named! Thank you. Just saved the file and will have a read of what others (and myself) did when we were quick! Ah, the good old days.
People keep asking me if I’m going to do another IM. I’d love to, but I’d want to be competitive - and I just don’t have the motivation to train to be competitive at the moment. So for that reason I’m just biking and running for fitness and fun right now.
Didn’t you go sub-9 at Barcelona?
Or was that someone else?
Fantastic, thank you!
Thanks Mr-me, there’s a bit of light reading for the weekend
Missed all of this first time round, not sure how (Or maybe am just forgetting in my dotage)
Nah, close (ish) but no cigar 9.05. Got too greedy with the run pace in the first 10 miles fuelled by the anger at the organised drafting on the bike. That inability to control myself came back to bite hard and I died a thousand deaths in the final 8 miles slowly watching sub 9 slip away, oh well…
Gonna have a re read of the sub 10 stuff myself. Feel like I’ve got a bit complacent in the last 18 months and it would be good to go back to basics and try and reinstate the good habits I let slide by the wayside.
If that was the year I did it, there was simply nowhere to go at points
I did it in 2019 but I suspect it’s as you describe every year there. Even trying to scrape sub 9 I knew I wasn’t going to be troubling the podium so I was determined to do what I could to ride a clean race and this meant that for large portion of the bike I was pulling a train of about 30 or 40 guys. I’ve definitely been in situations where drafting was unavoidable (Mallorca 2014 springs to mind) but what wound me up so much in Barcelona was the determined effort by a lot of people to do it in an organised chain gang style. Grrrr
Listening to Skipper on @Rooster ’s podcast and his anecdotal quips on the watts he saves while in a pace line are crazy.
Can totally see why people get sucked into it.
And can also see how the Barcelona times are so rapid if this is the case.
So Calella is the place to go sub-10…(goes to check distance from Barcelona…)
A pace line is one thing, peletons are another (IMCH amongst others), and then there’s the 2-man and 3-man TTTs that wind me up the absolute most - which I saw at Aix en Provence 70.3 and expect at Barcelona IM.
