Sub-3 Marathon Thread

Get down to a local cyclepath and go solo!!

You know … I think I’ll do that if it comes to it, just to prove something to myself. Might have to wait a few weeks though… after 7 weeks off booze I’ve arranged a load of nights out for next week :joy:

Bad luck. That sounds very similar to me before London, so I can definitely empathise. The one thing I’d say from that experience, is it’s very likely you’ll wake up on race day feeling significantly better. For me, that was largely just hype and race day adrenaline. I stupidly the still tried to run at A goal race pace (2:50ish) and had to pull out at 28k while still under 3hr pace.

So my recommendation is even if you feel a lot better, start off relatively conservatively (obviously within reason - as you say, no point running if you arent giving it some kind of beans, but dial it back a bit and see how you go the first 10 miles)

Thanks sounds like good advice. What’s the deal with Malaga ? Do you have to turn up at an Expo the day before? Just looking at some options…

Good question. The race website was rather lacking when I last looked! I’m assuming I’ll get more detailed info nearer the event. But yes, from what I could find, there’s an expo centre slightly out of town that you need to go to on the Saturday. The race itself looks pretty central start and finish, and quite spectator friendly.

Twhat, what was your goal pace? Was it 4:15/6:50, or something slightly more ambitious?

If it was and your goal was if it was sneak under sub 3 or bust? (which I think it might) then I have no advice. But if you can tolerate a sub 3:10 or similar it might be worth starting out at that and seeing how you feel. Or if you were planning on a sub 2:55 pace then just knock it back a tad.

I was hoping to be under sub 2:50 on Sunday, but after a few test runs this week my lungs (which as are still full of shit) are suggesting I should drop off a bit so will be going out in 4:05/4:10’s and then either speed up or slow miserably around half way.
.
Good luck whatever you decide…

You have put the work in…
Hope the cold passes quick, good luck if you race.

That sucks, there’s some nasty viral life out there at the moment. Feel your pain, I was wiped out at the weekend. Although felt fine again by Tuesday night, having shed about 5kg of snot, so hope it gets better as quickly for you twhat.

Talking about getting ill before a big race, Imagine if you had trained like a loon for years and finally qualified for some far flung race-let’s say in Hawaii. You rounded up the family and travelled out there & then BAM hit by a virus. This would be the stuff of nightmares for me, right up there with teeth falling out / being unexpectedly naked in the school cloakroom / having to resit chemistry A level with 10 minutes notice…

Edit: just to be clear, that stuff above is just a “what if” sort of thought!

@fruit_thief … that really does suck, so sorry ! Puts my complaints in to perspective a bit! Are you still getting a decent holiday out of it? And have you been able to defer or is the logistics of re organizing just too much?

@YKK goal pace was for a 2.55/56 so if I do run it will be more conservative now. Maybe a 1.32 first half and see. Not feeling any better this morning sadly. It’s only a cold. It’s no big deal, but I know from experience it will undoubtedly affect my run.
I’m pretty sanguine about it to be honest. I’ve enjoyed the training and I’m in good shape for Cross country which tbh is my favorite racing.
Looking at the diary there are some options but I might just go for a spring marathon now.

Twhat sorry- think I misled you- was just thinking out loud about how bad something like that could be! Hope you recover in time for your mara though.

Sorry to hear that you’ve come down with a cold. Hopefully there’s still time for it still :four_leaf_clover:

My garmin is predicting a time of 2:57. Wondering about using the PacePro feature - depends if I get a chance to test it before Sunday.

:joy::joy:

Good luck DT

Good luck tomorrow if you are racing, hopefully the plague is easing?

Great run this morning @YKK
NICE to wake up to someone doing a marathon

Impressive running as always YKK, nice one. After ummung and ahhing about whether to run i was told by a local GB runner who I know some of his best races came when he had a cold so I went for a swim and steam room last night to blast my cold.
Felt pretty good this morning so went for it with a 1.27.30 first half. Started to struggle from 20 miles but was still running 3 hr pace until mile 24 when I knew it was in the bag ( luckily) as I started to bleed time a bit… but kept it together for 2.57.29.
Pretty pleased all things considered. I kinda think it’s not a real sub 3 in old money as I had the Vaporfly… but it was a lot hillier than I had thought it would be (constant up and down really) and I obviously didn’t have the best lead in week.
Pretty chuffed :grinning:

NICE WORK!!!

Nice :grimacing::clap:t2:

Well done. Pretty well paced, especially given a tough week in lead up

It wasn’t sub 3…

Because of your trainers…

Duck that , as long as there wasn’t any EPO, course cutting or illegal pacing involved… you’ve smashed that.

With a cold …!

Nice one. :+1:
