Sub-3 Marathon Thread

Understand you might not get 2:50 - but to not even try for that ballpark would be a shame and just playing it safe!

(Coming from somebody who blows up in every race trying to go for times he hasn’t trained for!)

Weather in Philadelphia on Sunday morning is looking WET! Could be fun trying to stay dry before the start and then afterwards as I make the 3 mile solo trek back to my airbnb

Yeah, he’s too young for excuses.

Black bin bags for the start, then bag drop at the end?

Going to raid a charity shop today as well for something to help keep warm as I’ll need to check bag in at least an hour before.

Bin bags, and carrier bags over the feet/shoes I think to try and help. Fingers crossed it’s not too windy and cold, which when wet could be miserable

Yeah, that’s my normal tactic for throw away clothing. Good luck!

2:55:58 at Philadelphia yesterday. 2nd marathon in 3 weeks after blowing up in the latter part of NYC at the beginning of November and deciding late on to have another go (Would quite like to qualify for a Boston/London double in 2021, and not wanting to do a spring marathon next year this would be my last chance)

Travalled the day before and killed a few hours walking around Philadelphia waiting for bedtime. Windy and heavy rain woke me in the night. Died down in the morning but a mud bath at the start and trainers were soaked before starting. Ran out of time queuing for the bathroom (even with 30 minutes of queuing) which is never ideal.

Went through half way in 1:26:30 - a minute slower than NYC but with a minute lost in the bathroom after having to go during the race. Still felt good and ticking off similar ~2:53 pace until about 19 or 20 miles, but was feeling it in the legs by then. 2:53 (which I had wanted as would qualify for NYC marathon again next year) was soon completely out of reach, so then it was just about holding on to a pb - managed to hold it just about - 15 second pb (that was tight!)

2:55:58 - Not what I had wanted - I’d like to think 2:5 would have been possible if I hadnt been sick before NYC 3 weeks ago and still tried to run it hard. Should be enough for Boston and London in 2021 though. No more marathons for a while. They hurt.

Ah - still can’t post links to strava activity

Used the Garmin IQ race app again but turned off autolap and just manually lapped each time. Missed a couple but the app was great in giving me a revised average based on the distance in the race and not the GPS distance (which sure enough had a few fluctuations going through some of the tall buildings)

Awesome stuff @goldenboots that’s really impressive. Shame about the bathroom incident, as that would’ve been a nice chunk further off the pb!

@Hammerer any chance we can get posting links switched on for goldenboots (see above)? Cheers dude.

NIce one @goldenboots … hopefully that time is enough for you to qualify for those events. I didnt realise NYC was quite so stringent as i’m thinking of doing it next year myself… luckily i’m in 45-49 now but 2.53 for the 18-34 ag seems pretty punchy !!

Nice one Shaun! A pb is a pb regardless! Pretty decent to do that so soon after a marathon.

Here’s your strava link until you can post for yourself: https://www.strava.com/activities/2888385326

Sweet hell!
Your HR is sky high towards the end.
Looks like that hurt.

Well done.

Congratulations on the new PB! Well done for digging deep and getting it done :muscle:

That’s an amazing time with a bathroom break! Top job :+1:

You can qualify with a half marathon time as well though which makes it a lot easier - it’s 1:21 currently for my age group. I qualified a few years ago with a half mara time and then got a place through my running club this year. A good excuse to maybe do Chicago or something else next Autumn now I didnt qualify now I guess

Still gutted I could only muster a tiny pb - looking at my training for my previous PB back in January and I did more miles per week and actually did weekly workouts (though mostly just at MP) Would have been nice to not have fallen ill before NYC!

Well done goldenboots, bit of a shame about the bathroom situation.

Congrats on the sub3 and thanks for posting your training summary. Very interesting.

What was the 27 mile night run about !?

Running has been a chore lately, and I love running. I have reduced my weekly exercise from around 9 hours a week all summer to about 4-5 hours now, due to work (busiest period) and also just needing a mental break. But the body feels tired and heavy all the time when I run. It is odd. I can ride my bike with good power, but when I run it feels like my muscles are a bit damaged and just not firing well.

I did two Ironman races this year, so maybe a little compound fatigue, but that should have cleared by now. Wondering if I am sheltering some bug, or just getting a touch old. Either way, it is frustrating.

When is Stenard’s 2:50 attempt?
