Sub-3 Marathon Thread

Just rewatching it, Cunnama saying he’s done at least 80 marathons :exploding_head::scream:

And then pipes up he’s done 2:40 off the bike in Roth, Mark says “but Roth is short” :rofl:

They’re currently doing 50-60km per week, before the plan. Build up by 10% per week, and drop it back/keep it level every third week.
So that’s why it stops at 87km :+1:t3:

Science innit.

Cunnama could easily exceed 10% on a 50km week with no ill effects. He was a very good elite pro.

I don’t disagree with what they’re trying to do though. Keep that elite level element to the channel, whilst staying relevant to Joe public - from beginners to avid AGers.

Oh, yeah, I totally agree there.
But he’s retired now and probably just wants to enjoy it?

That plan is one of the “simplest” looking ones I’ve seen.
Could quite easily memorise that.

And I guess that’s what they’re trying to hit.
Be interesting come race day.

If you’re an athlete who can run a 2:30 marathon off 6 hours a week, you don’t need a plan, just do some running.

And then get a plan so you can close in on 2:20

I’m not seeing any drop backs every third week?

Have you not read the weekly totals?
Naughty boy.

That PDF plan does not look like the bar chart they show on the video :scream:

Naughty boys.

I’ve just entered Lucerne Marathon at the end of October. It’s a bit hilly, so not the fastest course, even so, I will be targetting 2:50

After Challenge Roth, I have 8 weesk to do some proper Marathon training. Any suggestions would be welcome

Must be something in the air , a lot of folk here seem to be feeling the love of running again

I’m in for a late October half marathon, it’s just under 9 weeks away which feels like the perfect length of time for a focussed run block. Any longer and I kind of fizzle out and lose interest, but think I can probably sustain 8 weeks + a tapir

Some really good marathon plans been posted on this thread recently. I’m planning to borrow the framework of 3 “harder” sessions per week, and everything else easy:

Tuesday = intervals
Friday = tempo
Sunday = long(ish) run.

Also - don’t hold me to this - going to try and keep the beer in the fridge for 9 weeks. So far, have managed nearly 36 hours…

Target, sub 1h 25 would be nice, but who knows.

You is a crazy, crazy man. What will the Tapir say?#

(i’m not going to those lengths)

I was feeling it, until last night. Me and running are not on speaking terms today. :rofl:

So, i’m up to a massive 28% marathon shape on Runalyze now. How’s yours looking @fruit_thief ?

Hows’s the training going @Jgav? @Chriswim were you looking at a mara as well, or was it just the half like Fruity?

I’ve just had a look at mine. Massive jump to 38% after that trail run on Tuesday. Bit of a TSB hole though :rofl:

I ran my first marathon (outside of a triathlon) in 2019 with a 2:58. I bonked at 32km, pace dropped from 4:01 average to 4:50! I ran the first half in 1:24 and second in 1:34! My HR just dropped and I had no energy, I think part of the problem was poor nutrition and also not enough long distance training! I’ve spent a lot more time running this year so hopefully that will help. Need to think about my nutrition.

A sub 2:50 feels close but probably unrealistic for me. Although I can never control myself, so I suspect I’ll do the same as last time and hope that I can hang on :see_no_evil:

Sorry i missed you d.t

Which one was it that you’re running and when?! I think nutrition is one of those things that can really sneak up on you.

21% on runalyze here :frowning:

But my 2 longest runs have been 18km and 12km, which looks like a factor

I hadn’t mentioned it before. I’ve been consumed by tri events but it’s fast approaching :grimacing: I’m doing the Yorkshire Marathon mid October - elevation is only 150m.

No immediate plans from me, going to shift back to tri/cycling focused ready for tri season here, and see where life goes. Maybe a mara next Aus-winter once it cools back down.

I think a problem with some alogirithms is the way they handle HR data, good or bad???

You are essentially a blue whale, but it’s not accounting for that and somehow calculating a VO2max of 81 and a 2h05 marathon

My Garmin often picks up my stride cadence of 170 and thinks thats my HR, even if just for a 5km joglet with the wife at 6m30/km

As a result it says my VO2 is 45 and predicts a 4hour20 marathon

Fully accept that you are better trained and faster, but do feel a little hard done to by these numbers :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
