Sub-4 Marathon

Not really! :joy:

I only use it for big races. But after trialling it in training a couple of times I know it works so don’t need to ‘waste’ it on training.

Xmiles is where I’ve got it the last few times.

Nice one.

Might get hold of a trial pack to see whether I prefer the 160 or 320 mix and see what the gels are like.

I would recommend trialling it - I’ve basically got an iron stomach but shovelled those in at Barca last year and instantly regretted it. Seems like 99% like em though.

Personally I thought the 160 was vile (tasting) but fine on the 320 and the gels.
But yeah. Give them a go. :+1:t3:

After getting a few of the Maurten ‘try out box’ and getting on well with them I splashed out on a box of 14 320 mix…

Skint now mind :upside_down_face:

How have peoples half marathon times equated to their marathon times?

So you are training for a marathon and have done a half marathon race as part of your training 7ish weeks before the marathon.

Trying to work out a realistic marathon time to go for that isn’t too optimistic or too pessimistic.

Did you hit the half 100% i.e. is that a good indicator of your current form?

How have you translated historically as you go up the distances i.e. do you tend to cluster at the longer end of the scale (diesel type) or do you see a big drop off from the short, fast stuff?

Raced the half but it was a bloody windy day so about 5 mins slower than I had hoped for so ended up with a 1:35.

Not done a standalone marathon as yet so really unsure of what time I should realistically be aiming for as I don’t want to blow up but don’t want to have too much left in the tank.

Probs want to do some testing, but if you have a decent history of endurance sport, then a 3.20-3.30 would seem to me like a sensible and achievable time to go for.

Not sure what others would think.

Agree with @gingerbongo, x2 +20min assuming you are marathon fit. 3:30 should be a good target, quicker if conditions / course are easier than your half. Depends what you want from the day, finish in 3:30 and you could feel you have left something on the table, target 3:20 and it could be a horrible last 10K.

With a reasonable training block I was never far off double half time plus 10 minutes.

I have watched a few marathons and really don’t want to be one of those that is crawling the last 5K

I have got a couple of more long runs to go before my taper and I think 3:2x will be my target.

3:15 is a GFA time but just don’t think that is in reach this time around.

I am finding it hard to gauge where I am up to regarding pacing for a marathon.

I have only got 1 mara to my name, it was 3.05
About 6 weeks earlier think I ran a 1h22 half.
Was on 3 hour pace until mile 23, and then dropped 5 minutes in the last 3 miles
That was in 2007 and it was so much fun that I have never been back for more

HM times since 2018
1.33 2018
1.32 2018
1.32 2021
1.30 2022

Mara times
2019 3.56
2021 3.44

Been unable to convert my HM pace to expected marathon time. Cramp did for the last one when I was on 3.30 pace until I wasn’t.

I’m not a good guide really, but I also have not been able to convert half to full times;

1h50 half, 4h55, 5h full.

Honestly chaps, I have the worst convert ever.

Haha looking at @Jgav and @APM I will be happy if I scrape a sub 4 now :grinning:

The gaps between my marathons is becoming exponential:
2005 - HM: 75, +5wks; Mar: 2:54 (x2 +24)
2008 - HM: 77, +5wks; Mar: 2:50 (x2 +16)
2012 - HM: 85, +4wks; Mar: 3:08 (x2 +18)
2020 - HM: 81; +12wks; Mar: 2:57 (x2 +15)

2005 was horrendous from half way and a death march from 20 miles
2008 I tried to up the pace for the last 5 miles and regretted it 2 miles later
2012 on reflection I just wasn’t in shape and struggled from 16 miles
2020 was as close to perfect execution as I could hope in ideal cold crisp conditions

Not far of a fibonacci sequence

Your still fast :muscle:

Actually I lied about 2007 being my only marathon, as also did one almost completely untrained in 1992 aged 18. That ended up being a 10 mile run followed by a 16 mile walk, took just under 5 hours.

1992
2007
20… no i can’t work out what year comes next
