Yeah regardless of external factors with course/other people etc, we all have unexplainable variable days where the legs want to rip it Vs others where they’re lacking that last bit of umph
I’ll give it a shot. I know the course pretty well now, but conditions on the day will determine how I do.
I am worried that every twinge is an injury lurking… and I am at an age where there are lots of twinges
Yeah, Roth is generally scorchio or wet & wild in my experience!
Whatever your time goal, I think my best piece of advice for Ironman training would be: “don’t skimp on the swimming, don’t over-do the running and on race day, don’t smoke the bike”
Jan to May swimming stats
2018 - 35 hours (1h35m / week)
2019 - 35 hours (1h35m / week)
2020 - 34 hours (1h33m / week)
2021 - 15 hours (40m / week)
2022 - 52 hours (2h20m / week)
Still low compared with others here, but significantly more in 2022
Nice step up,
it sees the jump you want!
I estimate I’m around 70-75hrs total session time or around 60-65hrs moving time. I assume your numbers are just moving time from a watch, so pretty much the same
especially given I’ve swam a lot more than planned with less running, and at least double what I’ve done last few years too.
In case I forget as I’m off to watch The Killers tomorrow, good luck at Cairns, hope you have a great race.

You’ve got this Chris, have fun!
Good luck Sir
Weather in Cairns looks decent, winds increasing as day goes on, hopefully you are out of the water quickly and get as much of the bike out of the way before it gets windy. You will still be racing when I get up, so looking forward to seeing how you are progressing
Really keeping my fingers crossed for a great result
Yeah, my alarm is set for 5 tomorrow morning, Chris must be starting at something like 12am UK time.
Nah - it’s 0152 in Cairns presently.
So by 10pm UK BST, our online friend will be swimming.
Should “see” him pass the FPros before we go to bed at 11pm
Ah great, that’s loads better!!
Up at 4am for Staffs so he’ll be 6 hours in, will check in then. Should be running by then?
Yeah, he’ll be finishing just as we’re getting in the water.
8:50:xx and we might even get his finish time before handing our white bags in ![]()
EDIT: no. They start at 0747, not 0700 ![]()
