So are the posts in the sub9 thread a bit not so cryptic clue as to what your Kona aspirations are this year?
Cracking ride yesterday by the way, how many of you took it on? 3 or so?

Good work Matt, youâll go well. Does you place have ceiling fans? They can be very effective also.
When I was there in 2015 I was in the accommodation by myself for about 5 days before my dad and my wife arrived. It did have a/c but they were going to charge me $40 per day to use it. I was looking for any means of saving money so I kept it off till they got there.
It was pretty uncomfortable and I vividly remember trying to assemble my bike whilst struggling to stop the sweat dripping into my eyes.
It wasnât the intention but in hindsight I think that not using the a/c was an enormous reason why I seemed to acclimatise so well by race day.
Youâll be reet!
I put the thread here as I had recorded most of my training and journey for Roth here, so seems right as continuation. Even though I am in my best possible form, I have no goals for sub 9 (but it would be incredibly awsome if I did). I actually have no idea or aspiration about time, my dream goal would be an AG top 25, but I realise that I will be racing the very best in the world, qualification may be soft this year, but the athletes at the pointy end will still be some of the best.
I feel that the Kona course should suit me well, starting with Non Wetsuit swim, the bike course is rolling, with nothing too steep, again this is my sort of bike course. As I am short 173cm and ride a small frame and think that I have a low cda, wind will hopefully be less of an issue for me than some bigger riders.
Ride yesterday started in 3 groups with 38 people in total (one left at 5am, next at 6am and fast group at 7am). after 150 km we had my group of 3, and 2 other groups with 2 riders in each. After 230km my group was down to 2 and the other group had 1 rider. I think that people fail to appreciate just how hard a ride like that is
Yes, has ceiling fans. Reviews suggest that lack of AC wasnât an issue. I am not a massive fan of AC, rather have windows open and fresh air
Thanks, this is great advice. I am hoping that all will be well
Good luck Matt I hope all the stars align and you have a great race.
I was jesting ![]()
Getting 38!out for a ride like that is bonkers!
Agree, I think that all 38 riders did 155km, which is pretty impressive. The ride had 3 loops, Loop 1 was 75km, Loop 2 was 80km, loop 3 was 80km, then had a hill climb TT (15km) and finally flat TT (30km). Most people intended to do just the first 2 loops
Will look out for you on the Thursday and give you a shout. Weâll probably be out by Waikaloa on the bike course
Are you referring to the distance or riding in groups?
As someone who ALWAYS rides on my own. I do sometimes take a slight pinch of salt of seeing some peoples strava rides smashing along at 30+ km/h for 100km or whatever (non TT bike) which is sooo much easier to do in a chaingang vs solo.
Why you picking on me?
I have one route I do this on regularly ![]()
I ride solo 95% of the time, but do enjoy a club ride. Normally I am on the Front dragging a peloton. The ride on Sunday was a pretty small group, but 280km riding. Group got smaller and smaller and ended up with just 2 of us Ilya was just hanging on for the final 50k - I enjoyed myself making him suffer trying to hold me wheel.
Isnât 30kph solo on a road bike a recovery ride?
My fastest ever ride was Tour de Lac Leman, 180km in 4h11m - massive group, trundling along at 50kph and just over 200W. My solo 162k in 4h5m was much harder
Maybe on Swiss roads but youâve got to put a bit of effort in around here to achieve that
20mph isnât far off the top group at the cycling club average in and around Kent, the cycling club responsible for Ethan Haytor, Leo Haytor, Fred Wright, Tom Gloag and quite a few others that are Pro Conti and Conti riders.
Errrr⌠no.
Your a very very good cyclist, so your 30 kph is probably similar to most peoples 25⌠thatâs like me saying everybody should be able to do 700? Press ups in an hour, as I could probably do a thousand or very near at least.
As Adam says the roads over here are proper destroyed in some areas, someone said that last year Oulton park,( perfect tarmac) which is far from flat was worth 4 kph for similar power.
Yeah, but like Iâve said elsewhere - none of those chaps have the KoMs around here ![]()
They all belong to my clubmate, or another chap from Buxton CC ![]()
Weâre gonna teach them how to ride to win, next time we see them at TSC ![]()

Sub 9 next year :- ![]()
Thats because they know how to train properly and that 20mph is not a recovery ride ![]()
If they train properly, theyâd win races.
Train smart. Race smart.
