Christ Almighty, sat in departures at Schiphol done a long report & accidentally deleted it
which may be a blessing for y’all
…so here is my briefer, Strava report with an additional cracking wee 2min drone video that just landed in my emails this morning.
Twiske BYU Swimrun report.
10*5.1km laps, on the hour every hour. 6 runs (4.13km) & 5 swims (970m).
Happy to finish 8th/105 & clock an average of 33:08.
Ditched Swimrun wetsuit in favour of tri-suit after 3rd round as I was overheating & compromising my running sections & that really helped with my laps.
Great event, lovely low-key vibes with everyone helping & chatting away. Even I made a - tall
- fwiend.
I must admit that I don’t know why I do anything with Ultra in the title as they are only fun for the first third, the 2nd third is overshadowed with foreboding & the last third is without exception miserable

Is this the Zone 3 Evolution wetsuit you race in? Any comments on it/other suits you know of?
I’m tempted to enter Conniston 21km distance and will need to get a suit. My proper swim wetsuit is getting very old, but I think cutting it up and trying to run properly in it sounds like it’ll be miserable?
ARK suits seem amazing, and they have some of last year’s women’s suits for £150 off. Their website states the fit would be fine but not sure I trust that. Might consider renting one for the event but do want to do more events if dates allow.
I assume any trail shoes are all the same? ± drill some tiny holes into soles and maybe top mesh for drainage.
Do you race in anything else? Looks like some people wear bibs to carry layers/paddles in during the runs?
Can’t see me bothering with a pull buoy or paddles first time out, would rather enjoy the runs without equipment and reconsider in future if want to be more competitive

That Coniston race looks great, I would also be jumping on it but I’m racing elsewhere that very day.
Good spot @Chriswim it is the Evolution that I have. It’s a good suit, but the ST is perhaps a wee bit small for me…I’m looking at a new one for next season. The Ark stuff is really good but the P&P/Import costs make them particularly expensive.
I’ve not drilled holes in my shoes as the Asics Fujispeed I use drain very well. I would imagine most trail shoes drain well apart from the Gore-Tex offerings.
I’ve always been happy carrying my paddles, but baulking at the price of the Ark kanga top did make my own to stash gels & drink flask
…you may be fine using on course nutrition, but will need to carry a few mandatory items.
wrt pull buoys & paddles I would very much recommend using them. Everyone anywhere near the pointy end will be using them. I appreciate that you have said you want to enjoy the runs, but you’re a classy athlete & 15km into the race you may get frustrated watching your competitors have an advantage. There are a few YouTube vids out there (Low Tide Boyz) that show how to set up pull buoys & you can get a HUUB Big Buoy reasonably cheaply & some shock cord from Bouncing Rabbit on eBay.
