Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

I struggle to understand swimming. Last few days been swimming around 2:10/2:20 pace, too warm for wetsuit and it’s been windy. Today I thought I wonder if a swim hat makes a difference, it was pretty windy with a tail wind on first 800m, I was flying, however, I was thinking that it would be massively painful on return, so I turned around, and was still swimming sub 2:00/100m, overall managed 1:51/100m for 1600m, non wetsuit… where the fcuk did that come from? does a swim hat make that much difference?

That sounds like something I would do

I cant see a hat making much difference at all, certainly not that. Could it be currents ?

Currents were strange today. I use the Form Goggles so can see my pace. Sometimes I would was really quick for 100m then slowed down again, I think that the combination of wind and streams flowing into the lake were creating some unusual currents

When I swam Coniston there were some really odd currents that werent that discernible. At one point I realised I was swimming on the spot s d had to up the effort. At the next feed boat I took a cup of sweets treading water and just floated away from the boat.

I swam in Bala today. Really weird currents seeing a big change in pace.

I can only see after I upload the swim but I felt like I swam pretty relaxed throughout

Laces ranged from 1:35 / 100m to 1:55 / 100

I put it down to the wind?

Jet powered?

The wind on Llyn Tegid (:white_check_mark:) normally comes from the coast, towards Bala & can make a big difference. The water is also released in that direction so you’ll also have the current flow.

In other news I think I saw the Freestyle 50m record went at the Euro Championships this evening to a young Romanian, but can’t see the results online.

It was absolutely lovely today.

Lots of SUPers and plenty of Kayaks but it’s a great place to swim

Might see if I can swing another trip there on Monday

Was the 100m
Apparently a big thing as the WR was set in the super suits.

1/1/2010 the ban took effect largely because of the Worlds in 2009 when the record was set.

It was a mad swim, went out very fast, thought he’d die but held on just about. 17years old and still growing, once his muscles are fully developed theres no telling where this kid could take the record, provided it doesnt affect his stroke. Sprinters are typically older when they peak.

Is this your current hairdo?

Is that the chap who got a medal in the 50m butterfly?

Nah that was a Portuguese swimmer, another one to watch. Mad enough you are getting 21year olds medalling but 17.

22.7-24.1, definitely holding on when factor in the dive, if anything increased straight swim speed!

Maybe it will stop the obsession with spending too much time getting big in the gym. Popov wasnt massive either but pure technique. Watched the kid in the 200 this morning, they had some great camera work. Stroke is incredible

Yes swimmers do seem to have got a lot bigger in the last 5-10 years. Especially the Brits.

Didn’t help Thorpe, although granted very multi-factorial for him difficulties after Sydney.

Did a session last night where we all swam as fast as we could until you got lapped by the girl who is faster than everyone one else.
Surprisingly good fun, takes your mind off the effort and can’t help putting an extra spurt in when when you know she’s about to catch you.
Anyway, got out to find I’d burst a blood vessel in my eye. I may be sh1t but never let it be said I don’t try

Ps. Please let me know if this is a sign of impending death :grimacing:
