You could replaced “fail” with “VF arrest” and I’d accept that sentence.
& now @hammerer-de-Sade comes up with something horrendous like 25m in 17s with 17 strokes off 30 seconds. What kind of place is this?

17/17s can be something else, this is swim or tri at 7/10 effort. I’ll do WU of ~800m - 1km then build of 16x25 off 30 doing say 17st/20secs for anything upto about a 6:30/400 swimmer, slower than that may do 30s off 45 or 8 off 45, 8 off 35/30 for someone looking to 1.45-2/100 . Again its about progression over time also and the short reset teaches the body to hold speed with good form
No idea - I let the door close quietly behind me after reading 3km a week isn’t really swimming
Tri club set last night, 90mins, id say above average 12-14 yr olds but none on academies. FC aerobic conditioning
WU (1200m)
16x25 off 30, every 4th hard, 17strokes kick ins
16x25 kick with fins off 30 every 4th Bk
16x25 off 30 w/pull every 2nd hard , every 4th Bk
Main
Aerobic Pyramid (1250m)
50,100,150,200,250,200,150,100,50. First length hard of each and settle , all off 20secs rest
4 x 25 off 1min hard
Contrast (750 +)
30x25 off 30 hold DPS, 7/10
Relays (mixed strokes)
Swim Down
200 no FC
~3500
You guys are wild. I did 20*100 today off 2min 15 and nearly died.
On the plus side every set was under 1:58 which is a breakthrough for me even if that’s how long it takes most of you to swim 200m
I went swimming again just to see what you guys were raving about… I too lost the ability to swim fast after 150m. #FeltLikeChris
Genuine question however. I’ve had a few months without swimming due to not being able to use a shoulder. I’ve lost endurance and upper body strength and I’m wondering how best to rebuild. Ordinarily I would just get back in the water but I’m aware I’m 8 weeks out from Tenby. My IM time is generally around 1:10 - 1:15 so not great to begin with and I’d like to minimise the damage. My pace hasn’t really dropped much but my ability to hold it without rest definitely has.
How would you chaps approach the next few weeks? Would you swim more often but less distance or less often with more distance? I’m thinking about fatigue/recovery when asking that. Also any dry land exercises you recommend for rebuilding strength?
I’m guessing there isn’t a magic pill that replaces hard work so what type of hard work will be the most effective is the question I suppose?
If you have lost endurance then I would swim less often with more distance.
I am not sure you will go loads of benefit of dry land stuff in 8 weeks but if you go for lower weights and higher reps that would work on the endurance side and shouldnt fatigue you too much for the swim.
Focus on some rows, should and chest presses
Thanks - I’ll have a bash at putting a plan together.
more often with more distance
you will need to do a longer session each week to build your capacity to swim a long way, maybe in OW, some could be 1k reps even or just laps of the lake, rest a minute and do another, and Id add a sharp fast session just as contrast and another with longer reps, say 15 x 200 type sets with short rest in the pool
less strength at this stage, you’d be looking to reduce loading and increae sport specific work anyway with 8 weeks to go, so use the time elsewhere, but think about some shoulder mobility, YMCA type movement things or scap movement work, just reach ups or laying streamline kicks. maybe some plyo stuff like squat into streamline jumps
I just knew that was coming back at me
You’re right of course but I need to be a little careful in the early days as a setback now will be race ending. With regards open water I was planning on loch swims first and then back into the sea once I’m happy the shoulder can take the irregular/rougher water.
Thank you also though. This is going to be an interesting few weeks.
Had a good swim this morning. Just 4 x 400m off 7 mins, but hit the wall in 6m05, 6m07, 6m13, 6m04 & felt OK in the water. Feels like progress… been many years since I tried 400s off 7 mins.
Q about session length. I’m not looking at racing anything longer than 1500m in the foreseeable. Is there much benefit to swimming longer than 30 minutes? Most of my swims are about 30, but about once per week am doing a longer swim of about an hour. I find the balance of enjoyment to grind shifts towards grind in the longer sets which perhaps makes me less likely to want to do them.
You kind of answer your own question there Is there a benefit though? it depends, El Nino doesnt race over 200m very often yet swims 3k+ a day , a minimum of 90minutes! and the 2 hr session is 5kish!
Speaking of the grind
20 x 100m off 2:00 @ CSS
10 x 100m off 2:00 @ 60 min IM pace
10 x 100m off 1:45 P&P
10 x 50m off 1:00 P&P
currently 50 X 100 in and carrying on
so bored
WTF, I’d rather do a double Bologna with you, buzz & tupps
70
90 tired but will make 100 if no cramp
edit: did it
100x 100, one of those sessions I always thought swimmers did not because they were swimmers, but because they were mad. But it’s kind of been on the radar ever since koalsfish mentioned it back on tt1.
Anyway for some reason, tonight was the night. Zero planning went in, I didn’t even bring a drink. started off thinking get to 50 nice & steady. 2 minutes turnaround, hitting wall in 1.45 ish. Felt fine but the hours were dragging by, it was so dull. at 50 had to make a decision - get out, or post something here for good old TT accountability. so sprang a few together, giving a clear minute to hop out dry hands and tap something here.
next 20;felt ok but by 70!was feeling tired & last 10 were pretty grim. arms and core feeling it
positives: held form; never have to do that again in my life
negatives: need a beer, and there is no beer
@funkster your next, expect you will swim them much faster too.
Nutter, but also, well done
Does it even count if there’s no jellyfish, sharks or crocs in the water?
Well done anyway
unfortunately Garmin died on lap 98. Hoping I can still salvage something to show the grandchildren in years to come. Because sure as eggs I won’t ever be doing that one again
