Better get back to the pool ASAP and finish the job
Amazing work.
I’m still a long way off
Blimey @fruit_thief, that genuinely sounds awful.
I’d genuinely think I’d prefer to aim for the 10k pool marathon.
One of the (very, very few) nice things about this session is it is completely mindless. Just go every 2 minutes. Even I couldn’t mess it up. Whereas I could and would definitely mess up counting to 400 lengths
Had trouble lifting the kettle this morning.
Also @apm, not ok when I come downstairs all bleary eyed at 6.xx am, only to find on Strava that you have completed your run already, despite being 2 time zones in arrears
I’ve just realised how long that would take . Kudos, that’s some effort.
Fortunately I don’t have the pool time available to attempt such stupidity .
3 hours 19 minutes and 45 seconds
interesting though, I guess many people wouldn’t blink at a bike ride that long. Wonder why a swim feels different. Is it just what we’re used to?
I guess riding up and down the same 400m stretch of bike path for 3 hours would be pretty tedious mind🤔
Lots of stimulus on the bike, plus if you stop pedalling you still free wheel & you can eat a mars bar at the same time.
Swimming to a cafe a stop would be an odd experience for everyone at the cafe.
Well done @fruit_thief
Has Andy Donaldson had any publicity in the UK? I haven’t really heard anything here.
He’s an ex-Leeds swimmer, think he left for uni the year I joined. Brilliant as a kid, but quit when wasnt quite making 2012 2014 senior teams.
Moved to Aus and after few years out looks like he got a a new passion for long distance open water swimming. Won Rottnest channel swim a few years back, and this year is on a mission to A) be the first person to do all 7 major oceans swims in the same year and B) smash the cumulative world record
He’s 5 down, with the remaining two set for July conditions permitting - the 32km Sanata Catalina to LA channel, and a 20km channel across Japan
Think I posted that he set WR for the NZ Cook Strait, while I was there, and he was just off the North channel record (4 minutes over 34km ). Hoping for cumulative 45 hours compared to current record of 65
And I’m sorry Fruity, I promise that was in no way meant to denote an also collosal achievement! Just I’ve been meaning to post about Andy for a while. Don’t know him properly after we crossed paths but few good mutual friends
haha
That’s amazing but what about the marine life? No thank you.
45 hours in the water with orcas and great whites. It’s like Russian roulette with Speedos
Think he did say he was chased by a few sharks on this one
Phenomenal training sessions discussed in few podcasts I’ve heard. Blocks of 100s off 1:05 turnaround, or longer sessions aiming to make 1:10-1:15 pace completely easy.
Holy moly. Think I’ll just stick to my pyramid sets dodging old biddies sculling on their backs.
Road to 100 x 100m week 5 - thunder stolen by Fruity
Pool was warm again today which meant after 20 I had to drop the pace a bit as I was overheating
20 x 100m off 2:00 @ CSS +/- 1s (1:30 - 1:32)
30 x 100m off 2:00 @ 1:34 (60 min IM Pace) +/- 1s
Yours is a much bigger challenge, you are swimming each 100m 10-15s faster.
small bit of progress here, tried @Hammerer’s water torture set again, 100m off 90s with 60s rest every 4. Managed 10 of them this morning hitting wall in 1m23-1m28. Didn’t actually time out either, just lost the will to carry on to #11. Reckon if doing this sess with other people rather than solo, might have been able to squeeze out a couple more. For me this one’s a really hard set mentally as much as physically.
So yesterday I went back to basics, low SR work. I got the tempo trainer out did short 1k swim with 800m of 16 x 25 @ 48SPM (off about 10secs rest) and 8 x 50 @ 48SPM (off 1:30) all with pull just trying to get my DPS up at low strokes rates. 48SPM is basically going to get me a 1:30 / 100 if I hold 15 SPL with 15secs for turns added on (1.33 m / per stroke) (yes its very mathematical not a random low number!) . Once you can do a 400m in 6mins @ 48SPM you are ready . single lengths all around 20-22 and holding 13-15SPL depending which way up the pool i was going and how quickly I hit lap
and the 50’s were 45 - 46, not too bad really as DPS work without kicking is hard! Next session will do all 50’s but some with kick some without to see the difference. I did do some 70SPM stuff at the end and sad thing is I was only doing 19sec lengths so clearly you can see why I’m rebuilding back up slowly, so I don’t slip water and waste energy when the SR goes back to race levels. There’s also the added bonus of building swim specific muscles a bit quicker due to the extra force being used at the lower SR’s
First swim, club swim, with Form goggles.
Weird.
Couldn’t really think about swimming with these numbers glaring down my eyeball. At least I’m extremely familiar with my SPM numbers now, where I had no clue before
App doesn’t seem to work yet.
It’s going to take some time and fiddling to get used to. But despite the distraction my numbers were good. 1:32 hard, 1:42 steady.
Knowing SPM would be a useful pacing aid in triathlon with an OWS. I assume they can’t tell you tour pace when OWS?
What was your SPM
Linked to a gps watch it can tell you pace OWS.
In their FAQ they tease a possible future navigational capability…
Not sure I’d want to be wearing these in the melee of a tri swim though. I always get punched in the eye at least once.
