Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

It’s taken me 3 years since I started swimming again after 20 years of not swimming at all, but I’ve finally hit a 1min 45 (.7) for 100m. How you guys churn that out as if it’s nothing over 3.8k I’ll never know. I think I’ll need a week to recover. But I have peaked. Time to retire

Maybe if I learn to tumble turn I could get rid of that .7. As a breaststroker I never learnt to do them properly so won’t bother now.

If I ever try to tumble turn again, I will start with using a nose clip. The whole breathing thing, out through the nose, no breath in at the turn, is a big part of my problem with it. And getting the somersault the right distance from the wall.

A lot of backstrokers use nose clips as , even though its the same flip, staying on your back for the whole underwater and breakout means loads of water up the nose. Its horrible.

I have gone back to using a nose clip as after a few years of being fine, I now am getting bad allergic reactions again.

Back Into the pool this lunchtime.

Told myself that I would tumble at the end of every length. I actually chickened out of this where the other folk in the lane where hanging out…

But I did pre-warn the others (only two) that I’m going to tumble and I’m shit, so if I’m veering off at an angle or If I accidentally hit you please don’t take offence!

Do you know what? It actually went alright. I had efforts where I pushed off at weird angles or didn’t quite find the wall with my feet. A couple of times water went up my nose and times where I felt like I really needed to get a breath but, I actually managed to string together a couple of turns that might just be acceptable which I’m very happy to take.

I didn’t really push hard off the wall, just concentrated on flipping round and getting that part sorted first but it was a big confidence boost actually. Also managed to get a little swimming in too which was a bonus!

Club swimmers won’t know what’s hit them on Thursday

The new time table for the pool at JCCS has dropped the early evening swim on Tuesday. Flipping annoying as it was generally full and obviously convenient as it was straight after work. Where as 1900-2000 is rubbish for me as it is smack bang in the middle of the post work time. Not late enough to east beforehand and still means eating very late. Will now have to swim late evening in local pool for their late swim. I have complained, politely.

25:44 as 15 painfully slow 100m :joy::see_no_evil:

But, seeing as I can’t afford to buy a sandwich, I bought some Form goggles, so should be back at 1:29/100m tomorrow :door::running_man:t2::point_left:t3:

Just showing off that your pool allows you to use paddles.

and fins

Arena Powerfins, you want some ego boosting these are the go to of most swimmers now and are utterly brilliant for drills and developing speed. Light, and fast adding just the right amount of resistance for building kick speed and strength also. One of the best pieces of kit out there

I was told that you can’t use fins or paddles as someone could be seriously injured. I obviously questioned that and they said it was policy. I did ask where this policy is available to view but never had that. I spoke to one of the guys who coaches a masters session and he said it is LCC being overly cautious as someone has been caught by paddles or fins at some point and complained. Never mind these idiots who can’t keep their hands or feet in their own own lane when doing breaststroke, usually head up.

Even when in a lane on my my with an empty lane one side and wall on the other. It annoys me as I think paddles really help with fitness.

We can use snorkels etc and I’ve even tried my wetsuit a couple of times :joy:

The club I swim with has a great relationship with the pool & we can do/use whatever we like.

Would they allow you to use the neoprene glove-like paddles?

I can use the neoprene gloves but i don’t think they’re as good and disintegrate after not a lot of use and leave debris in the pool.

Admittedly they’re inferior to proper paddles but better than nothing. I’ve been through a couple of pairs in the past that haven’t disintegrated. I’d be concerned swimming in your pool if that’s the case :grimacing:
