Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

Ooh Doony, I will check with the pool staff and hopefully buy them. It’s not like I have 3 pairs already :unamused:

@SidSnot

What was that beast swim session you did a while back and posted here?

X amount of 500s, 400s 200s etc that totalled 3.8km

Sorry I’m being a bit vague

(Got a rare window for a swim and needed some inspiration)

I am not Sid and don’t remember his set. I took this one from Crowie and it is very easy to remember 3x 500m, 400m, etc. to 100m with 2x 50m fast following the x3 reps of that distance. Adds up to 5k but I thought it a great IM set. Used to do it as pull and paddles, paddles, swim back in the old dangerous days of being able to use paddles.

Not Sid either, but I’m pretty sure it was a pyramid type:
1x500
2x400
3x300
4x300
5x100
6x50
=3800

It’s pissing it down now though, need to put my big boy pants on and get out there!

ETA there may be a spanner in the works, fucking double aqua aerobic session!

this time of year you should be considering keeping your anaerobic capacity in check with your aerobic capacity also, so mix it up

Oh I did this once after it was posted it on here and have never gone near it again. Think I started crying during the third 100.

Since TCR I have been putting together a decent block of swimming, several 4000m+ OW swims, and now back in the pool as well. After the summer, my swim is normally terrible, however, this year all is looking almost OK.

Got stopped using my fins in the pool last night, has anyone else had the same ?
That said I wouldn’t have thought many Triathlete use fins, after all a big kick is not what you want on a Tri swim. I am only using them to up my sprint speed for my lad’s squad’s Parent’s race !

Yeah, I think it’s quite common in public sessions. Fins, paddles etc, anything that can give people more of a clout than just your hand/foot normally would. We used them in out club sessions where we had our own lanes but couldn’t if I just went to the pool on spec.

I think it’s one of those things that depends who’s on duty and how busy the pool is which can cause frustration due to a lack of consistency.

use fins in the tri club sessions all the time, you don need a “big kick” but you need an efficient kick and they also help with ankle mobility

Do you mean an efficient kick, as in propulsive, or and efficient kick as in to keep you straight and level (for better streamlining) ?
I could agree with the latter (though I would say flicking ones feet is more accurate than kicking them) but not the former.
Personally if I swim with a propulsive kick I’m knackered after about 50m !

That was my understanding, so glad you confirmed.

Mostly the second, to maintain body position. But if you want to swim well (especially non-wetsuit) then that does require a much better kick than most triathletes have.
I definitely noticed by the end of 2023 I had adapted my technique in favour of a typical 2-4 beat kick, did a lot of pull work and zero kick work and my body position and technique were getting worse over those 1-2 years, despite averaging >10km a week

what Dr. Chris says

It’s mainly about balance, but the better your kick is, the less energy you use when doing it, and the higher up the food chain the more important it is to be a better “swimmer”, ie elite levels you need a turn of speed to get to the buoy first, or to bridge a gap, or last 100m to try and beat the rush to the exit, or even just to try to move some more blood to those legs so you don’t struggle getting out of the water and running.

No, that’s to get the blood into the legs before T1.

elite level they are trying to be first in to avoid the mayhem of T1 exit also (FOP), (same on bike finish, you see a couple try to put a bit of distance just to avoid potential issues)
