Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

So weird, I think we are pretty similar over 400m but my all out 100m would be quicker, more like 1m15, then tails off pretty quickly as the distance increases.

Theres not a chance I could do 100 x 100 hitting sub 1m35 though.

What’s your 1500m pb out of interest?

that poses an interesting physiological and possibly psychological question…

There’s zero chance I’m doing a 1:15 100. My 50m pb is 41s, at our morning swim club some 7:30 400m swimmers are quicker over 50m.

Once, a few weeks after my brother started cycling we went on a velodorme experience & we did a ‘game’ where were rode round as a peleton & the front 2 would do a one lap sprint. With only a few weeks cycling experience & me being close to 4w/kg FTP, my brother could put 10 meters on me on a one lap sprint. The diffence between us in fast twitch is quite remarkable.

I’ve never done a 1500TT, I’ll put it on the list. My 750PB is 11:30 but I’ve since mached that at the end of a 2hr session so would expect to be able to bring that down on a targeted effort.

“Wetronome” were the first (iirc, was my first) and it was brilliant, no “modes” though but as it was just a sealed box, they lasted forever, but it was a typical one use plastic disposable as you couldn’t replace batteries even (which is why they remained watertight)

This sort of “monotone pacing” is quite common in triathletes, some have no real top end, and does put a bit of a ceiling on development potential. It could be technical issues, and/or jus physiological, so that’s where off season i may consider going to a more sprint swimmer type programme and building some anaerobic capacity work (still keeping a number of aerobic capacity sessions in)
Obviously differs person to person but sprinting will usually help in other areas also with technique and “feel”.

First swim in 2 months after Parkrun today

10 x 100m off 2:00

Consistent, if a little harder than it used to be

6:00 last 400 attempt on our going home day, 5:58-6:00 is definately my barrow in best conditions.

Seems like you have had a proper swim camp there :+1:

I’m currently feeling inspired to try a 400 tomorrow before work, will see how that ages in the morning though…

edit: see below

Yep, it’s easier to enjoy all inclusive tucker if you can burn off some calories.

I picked this hotel out because of the pool & it’s a winner. We’ll be back again in a few years for sure.

Junior swimming updates
Epsom this weekend, it was a last minute replacement for another gala as the club entries were rejected, so heat placements screwed up and el niño had some B2B events but its all fun. 12pm -20.30 yesterday. 100bk, 50back and 100br. PBs in both 100s (50 not sat well) and 3 bronze medals. Today was 11 - 3 , 200IM , gold medal by 0.04sec! Was 0.5 outside last weeks pb, but he was trying something out. His coach said to pace better, but his coach is clueless. Even the dad, who is ex elite 200Fly swimmer said “you cant pace a 200, especially a fly leg” so 1sec slower fly, .5 slower bk and breast and 1.5 faster FC. So proves he has better back end as el niño said his rhythm was affected on fly so used as much energy and upset his fly-bk turn which slowed him there.
50breast at end, too soon after IM but only 0.2 off pb set 2 weeks back and nice silver bling

So 5 more pieces of “landfill” for the shoeboxes🤣 and 2 pbs + cementing times. Due a big jump soon, hopefully at junior winter regionals in a couple of weeks

I learnt to swim at Epsom Baths

Called Rainbow Leisure Centre now, reasonably modern and nice. Just 6 lanes so makes for a long couple of days, but pleasant place. Had nice walk around town with the Mrs.

How woke is that?

Tried 400m full gas this morning. Felt pretty good. Got to the end and hit stop… watch had not recorded :see_no_evil:

Bobbed about for a bit and tried again, 5m59s.

Bit disappointed not to get a time for the first one, but assuming it was under 6 minutes then think this will be the first time I have ever swum 2 x 400 in (just) under 6mins in the same swim.

2km in total and now coffee time :coffee: then try to fix the broken bike then stay awake for afternoon shift at work later

Bought some new batteries for the tempo trainer and up came mode 1 and it worked fine. Changed it to mode 2 and again it was fine. Into mode 3 and it just froze and wouldn’t come out of it. Very strange. I tried to find if there was a factory reset button combo but haven’t found that yet. Leaving the battery out for a bit and will use mode 1. Assuming it works again.

Edit: Leaving it until just now has let me use mode 1.
