Some big old summer swell coming in on Tues!
I’ve become this desperate! ![]()
Dear Ian,
We hope this message finds you well. We understand that you’ve patiently been on our waiting list for a swimming pool membership at St Swithun’s School, and we are pleased to announce that the opportunity is now available to invite you to join.
Don’t do it!
Things can’t be that bad ![]()
I’m not well ![]()
has Mrs FP got you scoping the school for LO
“just swim there for a bit and take one for the team, its worth it” ![]()
We’ve already had a couple of interviews up there, it really is amazing but no, I shall be going to and from the pool by myself. ![]()
25 years ago today this happened
I did sone coaching there when it’s as a 50. An under used asset.
It is generally busy for public sessions and the Leeds swim kids use it a lot. As I mentioned previously it is a shame that since covid most of the public sessions have become shorter to save money on life guards. Nice pool though. It did used to be in the 50m config more often before covid too. The GB tri guys don’t use it like they used to but I think that is down to space when in the 25m config.
I no doubt said this before but chatting to duty manager at the pool I coach at and he said they do 1hr sessions so they can guarantee max 30 (iirc) in pool which means just one lifeguard. Any risk of more than that they need 2, means they have 2 lifeguards on 15min rotation and the other can do other work when not poolside, rather than 4 of them! To be fair most of the public pools with sessions here don’t kick you out , except during school holidays
I think there might actually be a bit of a shortage of qualified lifeguards nationally at the moment as well which isn’t helping.
The local pools near me are always advertising vacancies but we barely ever needed to when I was working in the industry.
I’ve got myself booked on a course to renew my NPLQ for the first time in 13 years next month so there will be one more available albeit a nearly 50 year old one!
It was a massive investment in the area… always a little strange when you drive towards it…
I suspect they sold the land the old pool was on but it still hasn’t been built on. It is pretty rough looking around the JCCS but most cities have those areas. There’s a decent range on facilities there and the stadium is used for corporate stuff as well as sport. Luckily for me, it is a short drive or bike ride to get there.
I suspect they bought the land for pennies….its a great sports complex
I was hoping the esteemed members of this forum could help me with this question….
I was plotting my boys 25m PBs (a measure of his maximum potential speed) but very quickly realised that if I am to compare a single 25m swim with a 50m split I need to know the approximate time “lost” for the time ‘to the feet’. Is there a standard amount of time for that ? 0.25 sec ? 0.5 sec ?
It will change a lot with his ability, someone much stronger and more coordinated doing tumbles will have a much faster turn.
Best way to find out is simply try him in training sessions both to hand and to feet. But I’d suggest at his age he might not be consistent enough to get accurate results - I highly doubt he can do 10x25m always within ~0.1 of a second like a good swimmer would be able to.
And the idea of comparing a 25m split with a 25m race is also going to be inaccurate as presumably he’ll be pacing the 50m.
And I’d suggest it’s completely irrelevant to try plot his maximum potential speed anyway in someone who’s just a kid and who is 99.999% likely to never meet that supposed potential regardless, but that’s a different conversation we don’t need to repeat.
El Niño’s coach times turns and he does a thing sometimes at end of sessions where you hit 3 under a second you go home early. Its always 0.95 to 1.1 but this is Performance and many of the kids are national or pushing national QF.
I’d film them…and then you could establish exactly where time is being gained or lost…
