Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

@Poet

Over the last 15+ years I’ve had a few different ones

I had the bone conduction from Finis for years
Then had the waterproof case for a shuffle
Then moved to a waterproof iPod
Now I’m back to a waterproof case for a shuffle

For my sins, i’ve decided to do the dirty and attempt something that resembles swimming.

I’ve booked in for a session tomorrow lunchtime with a mate. The pool is about 1km from the first buoy to the last buoy. We’ll see if i can even last the 150m out to the buoys in the first place!!!

Oh man. This is not going to end well!

Eh???
Is it a quarry, then?

:joy: I’m just being silly. Heading down to the beach.

It’ll be warmer than a quarry. They’re always baltic!

No swell and wind is picking up from Wed through the weekend. So feel like I should grab the opportunity.

Some interruption on the sprints but my moderate effort hundreds (or 99s) are starting to shape up

Its 50m outdoor pool, 50m could feel very long, although I can swim in wetsuit

Another 2isk km for me today. I did 8.5k last week over 4 sessions. Hopefully get about the same in again this week.

Marginal improvement. Mainly that my “slow” swimming isnt quite as slow, and I don’t feel to be going all noodly as much. Lots of kick and drills, so not really much opportunity to judge actual pace, but my cool down 100 was a 1:40, which last Monday was a 1:57 :confounded: so that’s a pretty steep progression just in terms of what is more “comfortable”. Probably slightly over-stated however, given how much kick I was doing, and therefore my upper body got off quite lightly today

That was a shock to the system. Started out at 2:06/100m, then gradually got faster and was doing 1:52/100m at the end. Managed 2200m with a 3 min chat in middle.

On the plus side outdoor pool was lovely.

Going to introduce the pool buoy tomorrow probably just 6x33.

Unwrapping all my new toys and wondering what to do with them(!).

Probably do fins/kick board on Friday as I have anaerobic sprints on the bike later the same day.

The paddles are yuge! Ive only used paddles once and they were much more hand sized.

Not sure why I got the snorkel but I’ll find something on YouTube I’m sure…

Saw someone with a Finis Axis Buoy last week, got a bit jealous as I got my £3 Kalenji buoy out :see_no_evil:

First pool swim since 13th Dec.

12 people in the pool with 2 wide lanes being used. With the swimmers in my lane - which was the faster lane - realised as soon as I got in that there was going to be no chance of anything structured.

I ended up doing whatever I could to fit in without upsetting people, sometimes it was 25, sometimes 50, sometimes I thought I was finishing at 100 only to be waved through by a slower swimmer :open_mouth:

45 minute session I swam 2125m in 34:27 for an ave of 1:37/100

I’m sure that I swam further, but cocked up the “drill” function on my watch when I did some kick.

Over all though, happy with that.

Sort of did this session @Hammerer mentioned.
Mainly wanted to see if my speed is there, swine-o to endurance; who needs that?:see_no_evil:
I’d like to do Southport swim in ~11mins :open_mouth:

1,500m 30mins 1:31/100m average pace

4 x 100 warm up (free, paddles, pull, pull & paddles)
8 x 25 off 30s (20-23s per interval easy-mod alternate)
16 x 50 off 60s (42-45s per interval mod HIM pace)
100 pull cool down

Can I swap some bike pace for some of your swim pace?

Swim no.2 done. Improvement today, and I was managing 1:51/100m… around 10s off where i was in early December, not as bad as feared. Shoulders are painful as hell, I guess rowing doesn’t help with shoulders

I did 1000m, then 1000m with paddles (was slower with paddles) then 400m cool down

I plan to swim a lot with paddles to build strength again

I am hopeful that there is sufficient time before Lanza to get my IM swim time down to 1h5m.

HELL YEAH!!!
How would that work though?

Also, how are you slower with paddles?
Next you’ll be telling me you’re quicker with a buoy and bands :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(I’m joking, half)

65 is 1:42/100m pace, c’mon YOU GOT THIS BRO!!!

I swam that at Outlaw 2019 off a longest swim of 2.5km / 40mins.
EDIT: Looks like I swam a 1:06, actually. Official results have me at 1:11, due to the confusion at the swim exit.
(Ignore the moving time and look at the elapsed time)

https://www.strava.com/activities/3438052019

Averaged 4.1km per week (over the previous 26 weeks) leading up to that.
I’d not swam at all from September 2013 until June 2018.

YOU GOT THIS BRO!!!

Just don’t get caught in the only rip tide in Lanzarote
