Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

Is that cruising pace?

I’d have to do a similar test

Yeah - see my screen shot from earlier today above.
That session was just straight in and

200 free
200 paddles
200 pull
200 pull and paddles
Then repeat

Last two were a bit iffy due to Lane admin.
I was 3/5 breathing all the way.

Not sure how that pace would hold up over 1.9/3.8 km, but it’d be easy for 400m (I did 400s last week at 1:35/100m)

usually due to balance issues or core engagement causing snaking, the legs counter balance meaning you swim straight but with legs isolated the body does all sorts or things to create extra drag

So, hammerer, I shouldn’t be worried about being so much slower with a buoy?

I’d look at the reasons why, fix them and it will improve you without one as well. Saying that females generally struggle with PB work, because of the increased body fat causing better position in the water generally so the PB doesnt have as big effect, and coupled with less strength meaning they cant compensate by muscling through like a lot of males do.

reading back I think what I’ve said is you are fat and weak

I’d agree on both those counts :clap:t3::see_no_evil::rofl:

Its just hypothetical as i havent seen you swim, but think about extending the body through the core to try and stay taut and “tall”, I use raw spaghetti as a coaching point when talking to kids , dont be cooked spaghetti.

Ah, yes , then I tend to over-reach and glide :see_no_evil:

EVF  continuous movement, arm should never stop still, elbow drops. If it was easy we’d all swim like Thorpe

I was watching Sun Yang the other day. Awful stroke, elbow drops when breathing, does a police stop, irregular kick pattern. Must be on drugs to still swim 14.31 for 1500

Left arm much closer to the surface than the right when entering

Watch Phelps as well, he bobs where he catches too early (usual for fly swimmers) . What it shows is that perfect doesn’t yet exist, don’t stress the small things, concentrate on body position, alignment and catching and pulling as much water as possible. Oh and when that £80 video analysis says, you have a good stroke and good technique so build strength or gives some short cut when swimming 2min/100 pace, you really don’t

This very much describes me when I use pull and band. I don’t notice much just with the pb, but add in the band and I can feel my legs snaking. And as you say, it kills forward momentum.

I’m just not sure what it is about my stroke that causes it, so it’s the one thing I’ve never really had a clue how to work on. I focus on trying to be taut in the core as you suggest, and that helps a bit, but doesnt eliminate things. Without the band, it doesn’t even seem identifiable, but that’s obviously doesnt mean it’s not an issue

Cracking point to point 1k swim from Port Isaac to Port Gaverne today. Wanted to do it for ages.

Wife and I were actually having a beer on the beach with the boys playing nicely. Spur of the moment. Quickly nipped back to the car to get the wetsuit and agreed that they would walk back and I’d swim and meet them there.

A pretty relaxed 20 minutes. The sea pretty calm, a bit of chop once I was out in the ‘proper’ sea but nothing to worry about.

Super enjoyable :slightly_smiling_face:

We’ve been very lucky.

Had an hour of rain while we had a coffee and a scone just before lunch but it’s pretty sunny and actually warm!

Fun little swim today would be keen to do that again. Maybe there and back

Jam or cream on first?

Answer carefully!

Controversially, my wife gets it wrong and does it the other way. Easier when we’re sharing cream and jam though, then swap
