Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

Glad it’s not just me! Which brings me back to my point about these tech goggles. Seems like you’re investing a large amount of money in something that doesn’t have a very long lifespan, even if the tech itself is valid for a number of years use

Not so much swimming, but getting there…
…I am actually a 2 minute walk from the pool, most of which is walking round the crescent to get to my cul-de-sac.
I’m there and back in the dark/dusk, so…

…been thinking of wearing the dry robe there and back.

Thoughts?
Local lunatic? Flasher?

Is it that difficult to chuck a pair of shorts and a tshirt after a cursory rub down and then have a nice shower at home?

Or just go full creep and get a nice hotel style white, fluffy dressing gown and some slippers?!

When I start swimming into walls or other people; that’s when it’s time to change my £10 goggles.

I have different ones that sit in a drawer for race day!

I don’t have a problem with fogging since I started smearing soap (shower gel) on the inside before each swim. But after 6 months exposure to chlorine they start to leak, or I have to strap them to my head so hard I get a headache.

I have some mirrored ones that only see open water that I’ve had to 2+ years with no issues, so it’s definitely the chlorine.

That’s what I did today.
Dry robe stays at home :+1:t3:

I have tried that, but as a contact lens wearer it’s a bit risky!

You do have to take care not to overdose. And once with a leaking pair I ended up with suds in one eye. I’ve heard using baby shampoo is a safer bet, but that’s yet another bottle to keep stocked / carry, so the occasional red eye is a price worth paying.

On contacts, my optician keeps telling me that I should not swim in them at all. Apparently danger of infection. Last time I challenged them about it they did say as long as I disposed of them straight after then should be OK, but again, I’m lazy, if I swim in contacts in the morning, they are in for the rest of the day.

I’ve been ignoring their advice since 1992…

Looking forward to my knee healing next week so I can get back in the pool.

Going to get some regular short swims in. The allergies start badly after 20-30 mins swimming so thing I can get 1000-1400m done 3-4 times a week.

I’m thinking drills and fast 25’s should help then add endurance later.

Sound a good idea?

Yes, very much so.
That’s all I used to do at Nuffield in the Printworks, quick two minute dash there at lunch, change, get 25 minutes done, change, back at my desk snaflling an Eat. pot before lunch was over.

So long as you do it 4 times per week. It is all about consistency.
I think @Hammerer reckons to do a bit of speed in every session, as it is not so damaging?

Back to swimming normally again - trying to make a habit of it!
Attempted a broken 15 * 100 session this morning, seeing as I’ve swam half a dozen times since Outlaw, I slowed it down to off 1:50, aiming for 1:35s…but I was expecting my pace to be so all over the place!!!
Took longer rests after each 5 * 100, as I wasn’t expecting my swim fitness to be up to much, mwah-ha-ha!

1 × 200 Stroke @ 3:50
5 × 100 Free @ 1:32, 1:35, 1:36, 1:36, 1:36
5 × 100 Free @ 1:33, 1:37, 1:34, 1:35, 1:31
5 × 100 Free @ 1:36, 1:30, 1:27, 1:32, 1:31
1 × 100 Stroke @ 2:30

do some sprinting, 12.5m flat out easy to end or 50 m with 12.5 flat out. Could do mixture ie 5 strokes sprint easy to end, 10strokes, 15 strokes and back down again. 25m is hard to keep sprinting going over a session especially as its about building that true top end . You can add things like 16x25 off 30seconds holding race race, but making sure you keep distance per stroke up, <20 strokes per length 15-17 better! consider whether drills in a 20 minute session are the best use of time and what sort of drills you are going to do and the goal of them.

I always seem to swim better after the following drills:

15 scull 10 swim x 2
25 single arm left, 25 swim (focus on left)
25 single arm right, 25 swim (focus on right)
50 kick with board
Repeat

I used to do 400wu then the above, then a main set.

I won’t have time for that now, are you saying just get stuck into the short stuff?

Lunchtime CSS test. Had a good sleep, missed swimming in the morning and went at lunch.
After yesterday’s awful pacing and split times, I wasn’t expecting much…

Warmed up
Did 4*50s in 45,43,44 and 45
Minute rest
400 in 6:04 :frowning:
Rest, 4 * 50 mixed recovery, rest
200 in 2:52 :open_mouth:
Cool down

So…those 50s I’ve been adding to every session (the six since July!) have added to my short distance…but my pacing needs work. Lols

Are you doing that in a 20 or 25m pool?

25m - Finished with the 20m pool back in November.

Been using the 25m one opposite my house all week

Bit late, but fairly sure I read recently that there are designs on smart goggles that will display GPS watch data. Again aimed purely at triathletes who like their gadgets more than swimmers.

Ive always only used pace clock and enter my swims manually, but now I’m starting to use a coach and TP can see the value of using the watch to get TSS. Always misses the occassional length though hence why didnt see benefit previously.

And good decision @Poet on avoiding the dryrobe. Was worried about where this thread was going. That said I did change into bike shorts at work yesterday and head straight into car to gym, but then abandoned car 1.5km away due to traffic and jogged there. That was strange enough looks

Longer lasting and lets you keep your favourite goggles.

That sounds more useful. Expensive however!

This is something I think could be really interesting. The example data they show could be quite illuminating about your stroke. I would expect I’d show up weak on the pull phase … I think I overexert early in the catch. Again, it’ll probably cost a fortune though.
