Talk to me about Outdoor Gear

Dolmen Ridge was on the list for last year until Wales got put out of bounds! Did another route on that face near the Alphabet slab instead on our one trip there.

The Dolmen Ridge was actually the easiest of the three technical sections we did on that day; I seem to remember the Arete being the most ‘fun’.

I was wondering too … to me PBR stands for Pennine Bridleway Relay

I’ve run lots of sections of Paddy Buckley over the years - it’s roughness would have put me off doing the whole thing if injury hadn’t intervened. I remember a day out round Rhyd Ddu which really wasn’t much fun.

There’s so much good walking / running in that part of Snowdonia.
My favourites were either side of the A5:

  • Up the water board track to the 3 main Carned summits and back down Pen yr Ole Wen
  • North Ridge of Tryfah, Bristly Ridge, along the ridge to Y Garn and then down the knife edge ridge to Cwm Idwal.

Lots of memories - we did a family walk round the lake last autumn which was magical

It’s great when you have mates that you just know will say yes to stuff isn’t it! No matter what you’re asking, though with my closest group we’ll say yes before we even know what it is.

A plan may already be unfurling for @Jorgan’s link-up then down Bristly and finish with something on Tryfan.

For what it’s worth… I’d recommend against that. I’m not a big fan of Bristly at the best of times, but have descended it once, which I found tricky in general but was made worse by ending up mixed with a group who were all roped up going up it.

I’ve always run down the scree myself, which isn’t very pleasant either. One reason to always go up

What you need there is a ‘via ferrata’ style sling & Krab - hook it onto their ‘up rope’ and walk down it, unclipping between climbers… Cheers easy.

Take a photo of their reaction

Yes we went down the scree the last (one) time I did as part of the Welsh 3ks . I quite enjoyed it in a toe smashing kind of way! :joy:

Maybe we need a mountains thread. Seems like quite a few guys on here with a fair amount of mountain experience. I’m just a beginner.

That was our intended route, but I was with a guy who ‘knew the way’, and once it became apparent he did not know the way we were in and thought ‘how bad can it be’.

It wasn’t AWFUL, but there was one big downward/across step that stands out in my recollection as feeling very exposed and thinking if I slip on this one I’m FUBAR.

Jorgan - if I remember correctly (and it was about 10 or 11 years ago) they were on a course so there were three of them to a rope practicing moving together in an alpine style. I want to say there were 3 ropes of 3. It was an absolute cluster to get through.

Down climbing is always fraught with risk; it just doesn’t look the same as going up!

 i know! saw these a while back. they’re frickin horrific eh!!!

They look like they’d be a right pain to descend rocky/uneven ground in.

They look just all wrong and they’re so expensive!

@Jorgan and anyone else who knows the Chamonix valley - this photo has just blown my mind.

I first went to Chamonix in the 1980’s and remember the Bossons glacier reaching well into the valley - but just look at it now. wow!

Oh shit!

But then you get articles like this…

So, the waterproof membrane has gone on my Altberg Yan Tans. Shame as the upper and sole are in good nick :pensive:

They’ve done a lot of running, and covered in excess of 1000km I should think. But it just shows how fabric/nubuck or fabric boots with goretex are a dead loss once they fail…unless you only use them in the dry.

In a similarish vein, my Omm Kamleika waterproof, windproof jacket (I use for my big winter ultras) has all cracked and lost it’s waterproofing. It’s only a few years old, hasn’t had a ton of use and was looked after. Really disappointed at how crappy it’s got.

Wondered why my shoulders had been getting wet
I thought it just needed a nikwax. But nope. It’s fu**ed!

Chunks of it like this on the shoulders, neck, back and hood. Pretty annoyed tbh.

Buy it on a CC?
If so, raise a dispute.
Goods and services not as described.
You should be expecting ~6 years use from something like that.
