Talk to me about Outdoor Gear

Wow. I’ve got a Kamelika and a Halo 2 (full zip). I hope they last but I do regret not going for the Inov8 Stormshell.

Also, just for thought. I wrote a while back about how wearing a running vest ruins my shirts. I wonder if it’s the rubbing of the vest wearing through.

That’s a good shout actually FP. Not thought about that before. But the wear pattern, from memory, does match. I’ll investigate.

@Poet absolutely no idea how I bought it. Probs not my cc though. Was a good few years ago.

So I’ve I decided these finally needed replacing. Must have done well over 1000km of mainly weighted running in them. New ones ended-up costing £20 more than these, even though they’re the previous model now, what with Brexit and other market forces (I got these old ones from an EU website).

Yeah looks like youve had your moneys worth out of them

Barely worn in!

So, on the subject of waterproofs, I’ve started hiking again and my main waterproof jacket is still the one in the pic above (which was Jan 2011) - given that it’s a cycling jacket with removable sleeves, it was never the most waterproof in the first place!

I was thinking about using an old but proper mountaineering jacket … but it was so heavy that I’ve given it to charity.

I’m expecting to do mainly day / weekend walks over the next 3-5 years so not thinking of spending too much; this has got decent reviews - just thought I’d see what people might suggest in the 1
£100 - 150 range?

Rab is pretty good kit so could be a good bet. Might be worth checking out what Sportpursuit has got as they usually have some very good deals on outdoor kit

Also check out what Cotswold Outdoor have got - I have a 20% discount code with them so could PM you this.

For 100 notes that Rab is a great buy. 20k waterproofing, 2.5 layer membrane, branded YKK zips (pisses me off when decent brands skimp on zips, guarantee cheap zips will be the first thing to break).

I have heard good things about Alpkit but never had one myself, this is same price as the Rab but with half the waterproofing rating Argonaut Men's Lightweight Breathable Waterproof Jacket | Alpkit

I’ve had a few good things from alpkit. They’re really good VFM, but they do sit just under your Rabs, Mountain Equipment etc. More like mid tier quality but low tier price. So it depends what you’re going to do with it.

I’ve got a gilet from them. Ok so it’s not as nice a cut as like a Rapha or Castelli, but it does the job, is reasonably windproof and will keep the water out for a good 15/20 mins in a proper downpour - but it was just over £20. So excellent value.

another upvote for Alpkit. I have one of their down winter jackets - very light, very warm, very packable and got it for a very good price compared to other big brands.

Hold ma pint. After this mornings run on the Two Moors Way…

Up the big hill out of Lynmouth and out onto Exmoor?

No, we were staying in Simonsbath.

I’m a bit out of touch with outdoor gear as I rarely do much more than walking the dogs in the park now, but the cost of waterproofs seems remarkably cheap to me.

I’m sure when I was living in the Yorkshire Dales and doing a lot of walking as a kid in the 80s a basic Gore Tex jacket was about £100. Gore Tex was still pretty new back then and was a significant improvement on the existing fabrics, so maybe they could get away with charging a big premium.

My parents bought me a Bergaus Trango Extreme jacket for my 18th birthday and I think they paid about £200. It seemed like a lot of money at the time, but I finally chucked it out a couple of years ago when the taping on the seems started to go after nearly 30 years service, so maybe it wasn’t such bad value after all

ah nice! :+1:t4:

I’m in much the same boat. The big difference now is that there’s lots of different brands, a huge range of apparently different materials and prices, with (sometimes) no obvious reason behind it.
Certain brands (just as with bikes) sell at a premium, sometimes for good reason, some more smoke & mirrors.

If I’ve learnt anything, it’s that most people have a tendency to spend more than necessary for their real needs - largely to avoid issues like the delamination on gingerbongo’s jacket or just in case they get caught out on top of a mountain etc.

Thanks for the recommendations, will take a look now

The irony being that the jacket I had was supposedly considered a ‘higher tier’ brand.

Hence why I’m not looking at a high tier brand or price point!
