Talk to me about Outdoor Gear

Can anyone recommend a walking/mountain boot resoling company they’ve used? I had a pair of Scarpas done maybe 17-18 yrs ago, but have no idea who it was with!

The last pair I had resoled was Scarpa too and I sent them back to Scarpa for repair. It was about £80 I think. I’ve never used them but https://lancashiresportsrepairs.co.uk/ get recommended a lot.

Thanks. I have some gore-tex boots that an eyelet has come out of and needs a proper repair so will send it to them.

Thanks; yes I’ve already emailed them, and they’ve asked me to send photos, as the boots are 20 years old and have an asymmetric sole, so could be problematic!

Here you go @Bob. My two Halcons (older on left). If you want a jacket that can almost do it all from shopping, to country sports, travel, work and proper hill walks…this is it. It is quite bulky though, but the spec is amazing.

The seam which can cause some ingress when I’m only poncing about (not warm) is the one I circled on the new one.

Super mario jacket has a bigger shoulder panel to avoid that seam.

Nice. They look great for a colder day when you’re likely to wear them constantly. I tend to layer up/down throughout the day so my kit tends to be very packable and stuffed into drysacks.

I’ll take the plunge one day and then wonder why I didn’t years before

Better for when climbing up buildings in the rain

On Snowdon last week, I just wore my Vapour Riuse smock next to my skin; regulated using the zip and pulling sleeves up. I used it on the winter Fan Dance as well; although I never needed to push the sleeves up!

Only downside of next-to-skin is more often washing; I always use Nikwax detergents/proofing on my shell and softshell stuff.

See, now that breaks my head. Just one top layer and next to skin. Give me a moment :joy:

Paramo makes Rab Vapour Rise look cheap too; but not quite the same to be fair.

I needed a new pair of everyday dog walk/gardening boots that were easy to slip on and off rather than faff with laces so these have just arrived. Should fit in nicely with the farming set down the pub as well as that style is all they seem to wear!

Doesn’t it make you skin feel cold?

No, as they’re fully windproof and I’m generally running quite warm anyway. The Rab has a soft microfibre lining. The Paramo wouldn’t feel as soft against the skin as it has a lot of zips and a textured ‘pump liner’ on the back; I’d wear that with a thin base layer.

They would be great for cold ultras/fell races; but you need a tape-seamed shell for the kit list right?

Yes, most mandatory kit requires taped seams and a HH of either 10k or 20k.

I need to wash my OMM jacket in Nik Wax. I’ve never used it before, what do you do, hand wash in a bowl?

Oh I need something like that. Im wrecking my running shoes by walking in them so much and my waterproof walking boots are ok but right faff to get on and off and they are also a bit sweaty.

Redback and Blundstone seem to be the go to brands for these types of boot (they also do steel toecap versions). They seem to be worn by all the farming types around us so they must have something going for them.

Shop around as well - I got mine from a local’ish farm supply company which was selling them for less than the Redback UK site

Good Aussie brand, still made in Oz I believe?

believe so. Redback are Oz as well.

Bogan boots……
