Tapering

This is what I’m planning on next week. Any thoughts?

The Thursday/Friday commutes are unfortunate but necessary. They’re the only days I have to be in town

Also don’t pay too much attention to the tss. That’s just rough and the Outlaw split times, as I just put ‘something’ I will very much take what I get on the day

Swim - something around 30/31 - if more than 32/33 I’ll be sulking with a large chance of over biking

Bike - I’ve done this race twice before but in its first year, 2013 then again in 2014 ( 2:57 & 2:32) have both long at 91km. I’m a much stronger cyclist than back then. So under 2:30 to 2:15 I’ll be pleased.

Let’s just say 1:30 on the run. Seems a standard target.

Will be interesting to see transition irl as it looks massive on their info. Going to purchase some body glide for my arms and legs as I can’t get my wettie off quickly to save my life!

The swim always feels long.
I’d plan for a 32, aim to be on the bike in 35 minutes.

Bike is quick.
You’ll be well under 2:30.

Run will be what it is.

I wouldn’t worry about the bike commutes, you do them regularly enough.
Stick a rest day in on Wednesday.

Swims look good - is the day before at HPP?

Or are you doing a dawn raid?

I don’t think I can be bothered with the faff of an OW swim so will head to the pool early before the drive to HPP. In my head I’m doing something you know!

Wednesday off is a good shout

Do you have to ride the commutes? Looks a bit bike heavy to me?

Yeah. Driving is a ball ache and would required leaving at 6 and getting back past 7 depending on London traffic. Public transport is a train to Waterloo then tube. I’ve not been on PT since Feb 2020!

Oh!
The swims, don’t do them easy.
Do them at normal intensity.

I did 15 x 50m off 40s (1:19/100m average pace) the day before Southport and had an ace swim :+1:t3: (Barring the cold water shock!)

Here’s my taper from my last half - ha ha ha:
The “runs” on Tuesday were just to the pool and back.
Indoor cycling was probably some 5minute intervals at race power.

Wednesday run is 2 miles warm up, 2 miles at HIM pace, 2 miles cool down.
Thursday was a kit test day (bike, run brick in the morning, swim in the evening)

Friday off, Saturday just a quick jog around Swindon once I’d arrived.

This was my Helvellyn Taper:

I’ll copy your Wednesday run. If I do nothing for a day I think I’ll go mental. I’d also quite like to keep my do something everyday in 2021 streak alive. (Didn’t plan on this btw but have managed it so far)

Wow, good going.

I just looked back. Unless you count 15/20 mins of yoga i’ve got to go back to April 2017 for a full 7 day week of training - 3 of them!! Before that it’s 2015 … where there were 2.

So i’ve only ever done 5 weeks of 7 x day activities! I’m sure there are a few more instances Tues-Tues for example that aren’t so easy to pick out on my training logs.

Yeah I’m at least consistent :rofl:

When are you going to be doing your 5 minute cycling “openers” ?

I’m not!

I leave that to everyone else the day before a race

Last Saturday realised I had no sort of lubricant to use for wet suit sea swim Sunday morning

Went to Boots looking for some KY or generic lube or something else reasonably innocuous.

No.

All they had was “Boots Silky Lubricant 75mls” in a bright pink pump dispenser with flower motifs- “a staple for any bedroom drawer”- “Its clear, odourless, non-greasy and non-staining formulation gives you lasting pleasure and an intensely sensual experience.”

Fair enough thought I.

Pumping away in transition, got through pretty much the whole 75mls on the legs alone and only had a little bit left for the arms.

The swim was indeed quite pleasurable, and diving into the 13C water was an intensely sensual experience so I can’t fault them on that claim either.

Still, £3.75 seems steep for 1 race.
