Elite sport is entertainment, many sports are still entertaining with cheating, indeed it’s part of the attraction of the sport as it adds variability.
The real failures come when some groups of cheats are more advantaged than other groups of cheats, particularly if non sporting groups are complicit in it.
If the teams of those in the break stop riding, that is going all the way to the finish. Ala missed the boat. There’s no-one in there who’s a true GC contender (well Nibali if it was 2017) and loads of TT firepower with Wout and Asgreen etc.
There’s a scenario here, albeit an unlikely one, where the breakaway stays away, and up the biggest climb Yates, (who hasn’t had to work hard in the race so far, so must have fresh legs) hits it hard, and takes an absolute hatful of time out of other GC contenders.
I actually think it’s the opposite. When Wiggins went from a track rider to a potential GC with Cofidis, there were howls of drug allegations (weight shedding etc) and when the Sky train pulled out of the station, those voices just got louder and more cynical.
