Somehow he make up 5 minutes on the mountain and inside the time gap.
So either a lot of very sticky bottles, or possibly the time gaps were dodgy.

Nic Dlamini crashed early in the stage and rode most of the way by himself. He finished 40minutes outside the cut-off but was determined to finish the stage and not climb off the bike and into the team car š„²

Didnāt Paul Sherwin do that many years ago and the organisers felt that doing the stage solo was entirely in the spirit of the tour and so they let him continue
