In most of the UK with the adjacency of good short hills you can also choose to a good set of vo2 max work with long recovery in between.
New spindle for my Assioma pedal of power necessitated a FTP test
. I was fucking dreading it.
Still in the club.
Hell yeah!
What protocol you go for?
Cheers fella, this one is programmed into my Wahoo, so it’s easy for me to follow whenever I feel the urge

What does the rest say?
*As a side note, I’ve always found the number attained during an indoor 20 minute test and an outdoor one hour time trial…
…is the same? Because it is for me.
If I do 295W for the 20 minute test, then that’s what I’ll be aiming for at the TT.
Erm…I’m 261W at the moment.
And 80kg
So 3.26W/kg
But I don’t believe my FTP test.
I rode an hour outside solo at that last week and it felt RPE6-7.
So
I guess it must be the difference of living countryside, but outside of racing, I can never ride any real life roads at anything like that kind of power. Mainly because half the time I’m coasting, either behind traffic, other cyclists, into lights and junctions, etc. The only time I get to consistently put out power is on a prolonged climb
Same here.
Yeah, probably. Never given it much thought.
I do tend to Plan my rides to be All left turns and roundabouts where I can’t
But I can do 150m - 2km until I’m free of lights and junctions !
And living where you do you won’t get many climbs that take you more than 8-10 minutes either.
TBH I think a flat route out towards Windsor is better for constant power efforts than heading to the Surrey Hills.
Do you do the full 60 minute test with the initial 60sec spikes & the 5min full gas? I reckon that 5min effort softens you up a fair bit, I’m not sure I could give much more for my 20min test.
Perhaps in shorter race conditions I could better it, but by using the same protocol I have a figure that I can use in my garage or the Cold War Trainspotting Toilet of Doom & one that should be conservative enough for long courses.
Nah, the one I used to do before the ramp test (and which I’ve not plucked up enough courage to do yet this year!) is the 20 minute one, with a warm up.
No 5 minute all out effort.
But like he says, mine match up almost perfectly.
Yeah I’d say you’ve got to ride past a lot of crap roads until you can get to a properly open stretch
You can squeeze in a 2x20 from Hampton water works down towards Chertsey and back.
As @Whisk said out towards Windsor - Drift road etc… is a good shout but you’re looking upwards of 100kms from your neck of the woods!
That is similar to the Sufferfest protocol and they say the 5min all out means your ftp is 100% of the 20min effort.
I try to do 2 sessions a week - one SS & one a bit spicier like over/unders - along with a longer ride & I have enough problems using the 95% figure on turbo sessions. That 100% FTP would ruin me.
Sufferfest looks great to make you a more rounded cyclist, but I don’t see myself needing a sprint into T2.
I’m agreeing with you. If you do the 5min all out then your 20min effort is equivalent to your ftp, not 95% of it. Then your ftp efforts would be at 100% of a lower number rather than 95% of a slightly higher one - if that makes sense.
I think the Sufferfest stuff is pretty accurate. It awarded me a 363w FTP on the weekend, and I’d done a 50 min at 350w Zwift race a week or so before, including a few nice supertucks.
Just need to lose that last 5kg to hit 4 per kg!
Or get your FTP up to 383W

Without pissing in my own pocket I should be able to do both. Whether I DO is another matter.
363 is monsterwatts, I’d be an absolute weapon if I could churn that out.
