The 4:09 is a good time!
4:08 wouldāve been excellent.
Probably lost a minute with the pitstop but never mind.
I can understand the physical numbers, youāre a far better cyclist than me. But the whole story and context remains stunning and baffling. Major respect @Matthew_Spooner. Chapeau.
Thatās the world final off in Edmonton. At least they called it early. Might need to get zwift now to have some form of competition and something to show for the trainingā¦
Just curious about this and others smashing the Zwift-verse at the minute
How sustainable do we think this is?
As is, once life gets back to ānormalā how much drop off are we going to see in peopleās performances, come say next season?
Interesting question. Probably some, but itās always said itās harder to gain something the first time than it is to retain or regain it.
As an example, it took me months, if not a year+, of regular lifting to break through the 60kg bench press barrier. Got there quickly, but just plateaued for ages. Eventually broke through. Finally got to 1 rep at 100kg (still proud of that!). Iāve now not lifted in years, but would be able to go and do 60kg for a few reps tomorrow. My physique just changed over that period of my life and Iāve retained a stronger body as a result.
All Zwift seems to be doing at the moment is fine tuning my top end. The increase Iāve seen in 20 minutes figures of 273 to 281 watts is just that - Iām no more powerful Iām just trained at eeking more out.
On the road Iām pinging so Iād expect to be back to 2018 speed. 2019 suffering from a nasty head injury following a crash in the January. I still managed a sub 5 IM split though last year so excited about the remaining TT season if there is one.
3 hour āeasyā ride, 240w NP⦠TSS only 150, a big FTP is not good for CTL bragging
Those on IMJ Are so much fitter than you because they can do more than 100 TSS per house every ride and have CTL over 200
For sure, but Iād say you only really want a continually growing CTL if you believe it reflects fitness.
I know you know what CTL is, so therefore you know that a static CTL with a growing FTP is still very clearly an upwards trajectory.
You can have a 100 CTL over 6 weeks training based on 300 FTP, and stick with a 100 CTL over the following 6 weeks training based on a 350 FTP. Youāre clearly going to be much fitter after the latter.
Ultimately all items on the TSB should be mapping your training stress and the relative load on your body. And as you get fitter, a workout you used to do that was taxing might become easy at the same wattages. So you need to update FTP to reflect that. Otherwise a tough 100 TSS from 3 months ago is not equivalent in stress terms to the 100 TSS youād get today from an easy workout, despite the numbers appearing to be the same.
Have been considering posting this for a couple of weeks but thought itās not much more than weāve already said. But for those who like the numbers might be interested. Itās a 2 parter, one hour in total. Or you can find it in podcast form if you prefer that via The Real Science of sport
Personally I really like Ross Tucker, you might have come across him regarding Rugby, Doping in cycling, or the Caster Semenya debates.
Sorry the second part is the part where he gets into detraining.
Basic summary what you lose comes back in about half the time (or less) and just doing something goes a very long way to maintenance and slowing down detraining. But itās by far easier to maintain the top end by maintaining intensity, even off very reduced hours.
Not surprising or ground breaking, but well presented to get his ideas across. Especially when he talks about contentious issues like doping/sex identification.
Iāll try listening to them later. Iād read something similar about the detraining elsewhere. Not sure it was him, could have been Asker J or someone.
With a few weeks commitment I can usually get back towards my decent shape.
I assume youāve done the Tempus Fugit course recently? What was your best time?
Hmmm, not to go too far off topic but I think heās a bit of a nob.
He might have mellowed a bit now but for a long time he seemed to have a personal hatred of Chris Froome, and a lot of his doping āaccusationsā work around the basis of āI donāt think itās believable so it must be doping - prove to me otherwiseā which again is rather nob like behaviour.
He definitely has a bias that Caster Semenya should be allowed to compete, and fits his ideas and who he has on his blogs/podcasts with that bias. - I think the starting point with him/her should be that she shouldnāt be allowed to compete and she quite clearly doesnāt fit into the ārestricted category titled femaleā, and as a sports physiologist he must know that. (morally and philosophically she may be able to, but thatās not his area of knowledge)
(n.b. you can replace ānobā with something stronger if you see fitā¦)
Only done as a TT in March in 25:11, with and Average power of 289w. Would be interesting to see how fast I could do it now.
Looking back at the past few months, and the apparent massive challenge of hitting 5w/kg. However, once I passed that mark on 24 April, I am now hitting 5.4w/kg pretty consistently for 20 mins in races
20 minutes, 320 watts, 62.7kg, 5.1W/kg, 177bpm. Not paced brilliantly, fell from 324 watts after 11 minutes. Last test was 18th March - 317w at 65.6kg at only 165bpm (had two full rest days beforehand, this time around pretty much trained as normal right through with just a few slightly easier days to taper into it. Next will be to repeat the test next week on the TT bikeā¦
I can only dream!
However, I was feeling good on an early morning bike ride today so decided to tackle a local climb (1.6km at 5.9%). Got a PB by 29 seconds and crept under 5 minutes with a 4:59. Over 40 other efforts by me previously on this climb, and quite a few were me pushing it.
