The over 50's

I think there might have been a bit more on the financial thread, but was more around drawdown of funds etc. and factoring in the state pension, but that’s nearly 10 years for you, assuming you are fully paid up.

Think Poet did some good examples, but obviously outgoings are very personal based on your lifestyle.

As soon as that gets close I’m off to the bank with a gun and if it goes well I’ll get lots of £££, if it goes wrong I get roof over my head and three square meals a day for a long while and I’ll be too old to be attractive in the showers.

I wouldn’t bet on that…

an old school friend said that he was going to spend everything he had before he hit 75 so social services would have to look after him in his dotage. He feels he’s paid enough to HMG in taxes over the years so why not get something in return.

Might be my only hope by that age so it’s a no-lose situation

I don’t mind to have a shortish life post retirement, as long as I can find a way to funnel it Mrs FP and LO. TBH, I’d rather just work until I drop, I knew what I was taking on with having a kid so late.

I’ll be like Nelson in Animal Farm

I’ll get you a little friend …?!

One of our transexuals actually doesn’t have a beard… the other two do, there quite confused to be honest.

No one robs banks any more “ no money on it” that’s a direct quote, from a big drug dealer, I don’t think he actually meant for it to be a joke!

I have a couple of deferred final salary pensions - just getting quotes now to see how much they are worth. I am fully paid up on NI.
A lot of the uncertainty will be about providing for potential university payments.

I suspect I’ll just work less rather than stop completely
Will go and find the financial thread and have a read of that.

At that point I switch from paragliding to BASE and wing flying.

I read AF at school, but forgot about Nelson. Only ever remember Trotsky and Napoleon.

Nelson went ‘on holiday’

First day of ‘training’. Turns out I still can’t do front crawl.

Bit of context - I’ve spent hours and hours in the pool over the years trying to master it. Pored over Swim Smooth and Total Immersion videos, attended a Shaw Method workshop.

My problems are that I get out of breath quickly and I don’t seem to float very easily.

Weirdly, I had one occasion in a pool 5 years ago when I was able to do it - breathing worked a treat and I felt I could keep going rather than getting rapidly out of breath. It was my first time swimming after I suffered a stroke. I still don’t know why that temporarily fixed me.

I guess I need a proper 1:1 session with a coach to suss out what I’m doing wrong. Does anyone know someone they could recommend in the Sheffield/North Derbyshire area?

Thank you.

I could probably get a lane at New Bath Spa (Matlock) for a one to one session and/or video analysis…am happy to discuss options…

£ for £, 1-2-1 swim coaching was the best thing I spent money on to get better at triathlon.
Even now it seems slightly counterintuitive that as you get better at swimming is takes less effort, rather than more, to go faster.

I’d agree with that, someone watching will hopefully point out the biggest flaws to start working on.

I’d love to get to that point. Just need an accurate diagnosis of why I’ve had such a prolonged problem.

That would be very helpful, thank you. What’s the best way for me to contact you?

Apologies, bit of a late answer. Last year I did spend more time than I think is healthy trying to come up with a figure for a ‘comfortable’ retirement based on the figures that I currently have for spending. The figure I came to was 34k per year which I drop to 31K when I am 70 as I don’t think by that point I would have the same requirements. (I am assuming that the mortgage is paid off in all of these calculations)

So what is ‘comfortable’ for me it is 5-6K per year on holidays (I plan to travel and want to ski) and £400 per month on a car. You can adjust this and come up with something in the high 20ks were you still have a holiday and perhaps don’t run such an expensive car. You can go down another tier to say £22kish and still have a good retirement though you have to be careful. I believe that my dad is somewhere in this region

So the range is quite wide. The question as always is, what is it that you want to do in your retirement that would make you happy. I guess the answer to that is different for all of us
