The Sub 5 70.3 Thread

This is all very true.

I have been thinking about this.
Looking at my numbers / speeds now compared to 4 - 5 years ago sub 5 is not really realistic.
I’ve done 5 70.3”s and never gone over 5 hours but they were easy courses on good days to be honest.
I’ll keep plodding away, 5:15 should be doable.

I’ve just had another look at your 2025 goals (the press up one btw is insane; total respect :muscle:) and you have a sprint tri aim of 1:10. If you are in that territory then with the right training (you are already planning long bike and swims in your other goals) then you are very much in the 5 hr territory too. It seems that there are a number of us who are very close to this and just need that perfect day .

Right day
Right course
Right training as you say

Bolton is near me but 55-60 was won in 5:09 ? Ish
By a guy who is / was quite a bit faster than me looking at previous results.

Deva 70.3 is my “ home race “ and can be fast assuming it’s the same course
Not cheap though !!
Need a new suit, bike and some of they cheating shoes !

I know Buzz mentioned it earlier but the Cotswolds transition should be quick - T2 especially - I can’t remember my time but I was in and out in a flash.

ETA - not that quick actually - thought it was under a minute

I usually take leisurely transitions too. My last Cotswold T1 & 2 were 2:47 and 1:26. I don’t remember them being particularly frantic either.

:exploding_head: Did they bring your bike to the swim exit?

It took me that long to clear the swim exit mat.

Mine was a nightmare  T1 embrassingly over 5 minues. Shush never let it be mentioned again.
(I’ve since cut 2cms off the sleeves and legs of my wetsuite)

The racking at Cotswolds is so close to swim exit there is a risk you don’t have time to get your wetsuit to your waste before you reach your bike. But even then, and putting socks on to help with the early morning temperatures, it should be less than 5 mins for T1+T2.

Was this 2024?

It was 250m

Race day is getting closer and I’m also looking for a few more races from August onwards. The race in StG was hard to gauge with the conditions, I doubt it’ll be that hot here! The swim went alright.

Yesterday’s TT was a bit better than expected and although I wouldn’t be running fast if I try putting that much power out for 90k I’m hoping on a decent day\course I’ll be around 2:30 still. Hopefully have a TT bike and the full aero helmet etc.

Running is getting there, I think I’d be around 90 minutes for a standalone half on a good day with the fast trainers, so around 1:40 off the bike.

I just need to get back to the pool a bit more often and a few longer rides again!

Two more goes at this in the next fortnight then that’s it for triathlon this year I think, doubt I’ll be travelling to do any more.

First up is this Saturday at the Sundowner. I’ve just read the briefing notes though and it looks like the bike is about 2K short and run might be slightly short, but is offset by the fact it looks like it is mostly on track, at least they should be dry. Wondering if it is something like the 113 run. Also says the swim accuracy depends on water depth and some shallow lakes are quite low this year but we’ll see. At least the transitions are short. Haven’t ridden the roads for a while but were decent when I did a 100M TT about 9 years ago, and only about 120m of ascent! Early forecast suggests possible showers and only about 16c but mid-afternoon so can hopefully survive it!

Week after is the trip to Belgrade, they’re selling it as one of the flattest 70.3 courses, looks like the bike goes over the big bridge 4 times though which is a bit exposed that I can remember from the half a few years ago. Swim is a lake\bay which I think links to the river.

Think I’m touch and go, if things go right I’m hopeful I can break 5 at least once, last block of training wasn’t bad with a bit of running speed and cycling at a target power. Lack of longer rides particularly on the TT bike might count against me as this will be the first time I do anything long on it. Swimming hasn’t been great but I have at least got in the lake twice as well.

Loose splits are;

Swim 37:3x
Bike - 2:30 - 2:35
Run - <1:40

The bottom end of those gives me 12-13 minutes for transitions and faff time!

Big winter base on the bike, swimming consistent across the year.

Not obvious if they’d qualified that year or 2024? Some of those weeks are regularly around 15 hours in Spring, quite a lot and I’m sure some people qualified on a lot less.
