Back on the TT for the first club TT of the year albeit a 5 miler. Great to have a blast and not think about getting off and running
Got the startsheet for the 25 this weekend, 60 entries and a few trikes so not a bad turnout as it isn’t exactly a quick course, although traffic is usually low.
I just need to get a bike sorted!
Anfield 100for me yesterday.
Impressive 105 riders, we got slaughtered by a cruel wind.
Ride was 4:30, solid but not spectacular, but decent IM workout with a 3 mile run off.
Ride of the day undoubtedly the VTTA winner: 75 years old, he rode 4:20, which made his age adjusted time 3:20!
Club 10TT champs tonight and used the MyWindsock premium features which are pretty neat. The analysis is so much more detailed than what I was expecting.
Well that was every bit as miserable as I remember ![]()
I sat up with 10m to go and ended up with 66:00 ![]()
But somehow put out 285W
and felt like there could have been a little bit more especially without the parkrun.
Fairly pleased on the road bike, conditions were good though, warm and although there’s a breeze it didn’t feel like a significant help or hindrance.
Edit: the windsock at Dishforth was pretty much showing a westerly which was pretty much a cross wind.
very decent wattage ![]()
As per the purchases thread I tried the new bike tonight and it went as badly as expected
TBF I’d never planned on hammering it and it felt a bit windy but nice and warm. Only managed just over 250W so nearly 30W down on the 25 a couple of weeks ago.
Other than the intensity I suspect being in such a low position didn’t help, but a good starting place.
Only managed 26:13! I’m going to say it isn’t a fast course, but the course record was lowered to 21:00 which won’t get broken for quite a while. He was actually on the same basic bike but very much improved with good wheels and tyres, also had his aero A game including shaved legs!
Might also be worth mentioning that he used to be a UK pro or something ![]()
Got a 25 tomorrow but hoping this wind has eased a bit as it’s been relentless for a few days. Forecast is saying cooler and maybe some showers though ![]()
It’s more a spoco course than anything fast and I’m pondering whether to take the new TT which I’m not expecting to be very comfortable given the warmup\cooldown or maybe just do it on the roadie. It’s looking more likely I’ll just use the Propel at Cotswold as I can’t see me being able to even stand up after 90k in the current position and I’m pretty much out of time to change and test.
Not expecting much given how the legs have been feeling but also aiming to get in the lake afterwards as it’s nearby.
I forced myself to the TT this morning
still feeling sluggish despite a good sleep but the forecast was showers so made a late decision to put the TT bars on the propel and use that, partly to have a test on it for next week but mostly because I didn’t want the new bike to get wet and dirty ![]()
Pretty much 2 laps of 20k, and the wind had actually just about died down but as above there was some dark clouds looking on the horizon. Was a bit of a struggle at the start despite being on the better roads with any breeze behind me, I knew I wasn’t pushing hard but it wasn’t too bad, the second half of the lap is more back roads with a few twists and turns and little draggy climbs, and also heads back into the breeze before picking up the main road.
First lap was just under 34 minutes so I knew it wasn’t going to be a good day and backed off power wise for the next 10K but was actually a bit faster
got back on the rolling part and was at a steady power that I thought I could hold for 90K. Final time was something rubbish like 67:44. Almost 2 minutes slower than I did on a road bike 5 weeks ago, albeit that was a better course.
Had a slightly longer ride back and as a result got caught in shower just to cheer me up ![]()
but did at least get some cake at HQ. So need to clean the bike now and change the brake discs and pads.
Looking back at the power it was possibly better than I thought, AP was only 225W and HR 150, that’s a fairly steady pace normally so to get 68 minutes on that course wasn’t too bad. Would hope to put out a few more watts next week and maybe get around 2:35 or just under.
Did a local 10 mile TT this morning, course isn’t a dragstrip but pretty good, road surface is good and low traffic but a bit rolling in places. The wind wasn’t really strong and mostly across but with the way back slightly shorter you got a bit more help than against you. With one exception on a bridge over the A1 which was an absolute grind as we straight into it.
Used the TT bike and most of my aerokit and got round in 24:11 which I was fairly pleased with, winner was 20:10 or something and he’s very good.
AP was 280W which was about the same as the 25 a few months ago but HR was a bit low, but any recent cycling efforts have generally been around 240W so certainly training for a race like this.
Position is improving but my shoulders felt a bit tight later on but possibly from wrestling with the bars like I usually do ![]()
Probably the last TT for the year though.
Nice effort
Well done @jeffb
Been looking at this year’s race calendar and going to struggle to do many as they either clash with other races or holidays or just don’t fancy the course. For example there’s going to be a fast 100 locally but I don’t want to race on the A19 anymore even if I start at 7am.
But this proposal sounds like a good idea if it gets the go ahead, lots of courses lost to new developments etc.
Wait, what?
Also up for debate is a proposal to reverse a ruling last year specifying that only bike frames marketed specifically for road (not time trial) use can be used in road bike time trials, and a proposal to reduce the maximum rim depth of front and rear wheels from 90mm to 65mm – also for road bike time trials.
So they want reinstate tt bikes, but excludes deep section? I didn’t even realise they’d banned tt bikes from tts.
Actually depending how this plays out it could help me decide whether to repair my uci legal tri bike.
Can you use tri bars on a roadie in tt as is?
I’d missed some of that and don’t know how to interpret it. I’m thinking deeper rims on a road bike won’t be permitted, I’m fairly sure I saw someone with a road bike and disc rear wheel, not really what the rule change was designed to help.
When I rode my Propel with tribars I was classed as TT.
See if they provide clarification if\when they pass.
They hadn’t, they created a separate road bike category. I think to make it more accessible, stopping the “need” to buy a separate time trial bike and equipment.
UCI rules are also applied to draft legal world triathlon races so wheel rim depth is limited to 65mm.
We were checked in Poland last year against the sanctioned wheel manufacturers as well.
Quite timely, this popped up on my YouTube feed, discussing most of the issues around TT bikes and the road bike category.
Persuaded my tri club to affiliate to CTT again and have created an club TT comptition. Its cumulative results on the London North Millennium set of races.
Hoping adding a few entrants ti each of those races helps the clubs that puts them on. And gives more of a bike focus to our tri club which lacks bike training or even regular group rides.
When London Dynamo started running the Richmond Park TTs they introduced a road bike category but didn’t specify what that actually meant.
I think the first one was one by a blocked from one of the local bike shops with a disc wheel and clip-on tri bars.
They changed the rules for the next race to ban clip-on bars and limit the depth of wheels.
They also introduced a fixed wheel category, presumably aimed at commuters and cycle couriers (that’s how long ago it was
).
I did the first race in my commuter bike, complete with mudguards and rack. There was maybe 4 or 5 other entries and we were all riding similar bikes. I won that race by a reasonable margin.
I went back for the second race that they ran and there was two blokes riding track pursuit bikes, complete with disc wheels and pointy helmets ![]()
Funnily enough, I didn’t win that one
. (I think Xavier from TT1.0 won)
