I’ve heard that, but isnt there some kind of limit to underwater kicking and why doesn’t it stop Dressel from being ahead underwater?
You have to break the surface of the water by 15m.
So the other guys are coming up at 14m? I’m struggling to see how he gets ahead there.
Yer I think he has so much more explosive power off the blocks it gives him a head start. He doesn’t seem to spend much less underwater either, stroke or two earlier. We do a lot of plyometric work with older swimmers to help build this explosive power. As a sprinter he’s probably doing a lot of strength work also in the legs.
4x100 relays were cracking races too.
How do you deal with the breathing side of this?
If I do an explosive anything (squat jump, bursts on the bike, push off the wall) I immediately start panting for air. It’s fine if I can just stop and recover, manageable on the bike, but a disaster in the pool. All my push offs are purposefully soft as a result
I was confused with the underwater swimming with the GB guy in the mixed 4 x 100 relay. The fly swimmer on return swam almost 25m underwater and went from about 5th to 1st as he came up for air?
His lines drop heavier than anchors - loved the whole ‘… That’s me, Michael Johnson and Tyson Gay - in the same studio’
MJ giggling
Practice, if you think the average 11 year old will be doing 10-15k pw that’s 400-600 turns. It’s about controlling the exhale, slow trickle out. Must admit I struggle with it now as well. With 5m in and 10m out thats a long time with no breath in!
It’s 15m maximum, still a long way mind. It’s why SC times are so much faster, they swim 40m per 100!
Who was the backstroke guy who pretty much made them change the rule to 15m
Whitlock in the pommel
Becky Adlington was saying he’s the faster starter in the pool and it gives him a massive advantage.
Yeah, didn’t he swim something crazy like a length and a half underwater?
Yeah people die doing this in their home pools as party tricks
Found him
High jump final - amazing to watch
100m heats. Chinese boy out the blocks like a fire cracker - puts the cat amongst the pigeons. Final this evening looks pretty open
The guy from Game of Thrones is going ok.
Women’s triple jump, 26 yr old record - Rojas nailed WR on final jump. Destroyed it.
Yeah, made it look easy. Her step phase, compared to say how Jonathan Edwards did it, is so short as well. So it would seem like she has the ability with some refinement to go way way further
