It’s not quite like that but I’d like some clarity on the rules. I get that neither could jump any higher, but nor could the guy in bronze. All three did the same height.
Bashim looked cooler too.

The bmx is great viewing especially if you have a couple of hours to spare and watch the whole competition on i-player
this.
I noticed Bashim clapping in time as Tamberi made his 3rd attempt. They clearly didn’t know it was possible but they were ahead of everyone else with perfect records until they got ro 2.39. It’s nice to have a feel good story with two very good athletes.
The guy in 3rd took two attempts at 2.19 iirc. Tamberi didn’t have his usual half-beard, etc.
I liked Charlotte in that BMX final - might as well just go for it, do or die, gold or nowt, great attitude.
For me it’s just about finishing (an event) but then again I’m not at the top of my game
This is my favourite gold of the games so far, although the high jump very worthy of a chapeau I think.
I kind of got the impression in the high jump that the official wasn’t too sure if the gold could be shared or not… if it had been a different official might the answer have been different? Not allowed in triathlon anyway!
So, 100m, dirtiest of all the events. Biggest disruption to the testing regime ever this last 18 months, and it’s won by someone no one has ever heard of.
I’ve not been able to find the full rules, what I have seen say “[must] have a jump off”, but the format of the jump off seems to be only down to their previous cleared height, in which case if they all failed down to it, I think a tie is allowed, but I’m not completely sure as I can’t find anything as to what happens, it may be simply not covered at all.
As always - new heroes and new stories come to the fore. Some athletes have cemented their legacy like Johnny Brownlee, others like Alex Yee have just begun theirs. Stories about the MTB era, gymnasts and swimmers is fantastic. The moment so far for me though was the 2 high jumpers. A genuinely beautiful moment that also reflected love, respect and camaraderie amongst athletes. Roll on Paris
Yep, completely agree. A perfect balance of intense competitiveness and massive respect for fellow competitors. The Olympic ideal in one moment.
Now really excited to watch the climbing… its looks like a massive adrenaline buzz, and suspect it’ll make fantastic viewing!
It’s a slow burner
Loving Duncan Scott - who received a ton of abuse by that Chinese Cunt for being a loser - now most successful Brit swimmer at an Olympics. Where’s that Chinese Cunt? Oh he’s been banned - for doping. What A LOSER/ cunt
I did a bit of high jumping (and coaching) back in the day. Jump off rules I competed by were:
I know they changed the count back rules around the time I stopped jumping, so maybe jump off rules have changed too.
As I say, haven’t seen it yet, and I’m sure it was a great moment, but athletes have been disqualified for trying to engineer a tie so I’m surprised it was allowed.
I think we are starting to see the 2012 legacy coming through. Kids who were inspired by the London Olympics are now winning their own medals. Seems to be a very young team on the whole.
Bah humbug
Laura Muir - 1500m heats in about 15 mins
( ran past her in the west end few years ago - she’s tiny! )
… just realised I’ve run past her twice. She was doing some hill sessions with some runners at bottom of Cleveland drive/ canal - Very nasty short sharp hill
… qualified comfortably
Incredibly - Hassan in second heat collided with athlete and keeled over with 300m to go. Got up having lost touch with field - clawed back on won heat
Third heat wasn’t without drama either
… never seen so many collisions and falls in one competition- 400m hurdles, 800m men’s heats, 5000m, 1500m heats, 110 hurdles and 100m - athletes falling, tripping, colliding left right and centre
Agree. Mix of huge funding push around 2004-2012, more success in those games creating role models, and the home Olympics effect and drives at participation and getting people into sport.
The swimmers all credit Peaty is being the one thats shown them what’s possible and lifted the ambition of the team since 2014, but I think Becky in 2008 was the start of the catalyst for athletes and better coaching set ups. By 2012 we were having good improvements in the squad with people coming through but failed to show it the week that it mattered.
Since then swim team has had unbelievable results compared to anything before 2008.
