Trail & Ultra Running Thread

That is the 5th time I’ve ran this race, my fastest Day 2 and fastest combined, the conditions definitely helped and I got the pacing pretty much spot on (other than I think I left a bit too much in the tank).

Did you do anything different nutrition wise Doug? I’m still trying to get that part right.

Not really, probably used less of my own stuff and picked up more at the checkpoints, especially the Babybel, mini cheddars and sausage rolls.

I haven’t really tested the theory but for winter ultras, especially at night, I wonder if more liquid strategy would be better whilst moving and then load up at aid stations on real food?

I don’t think I’d be inclined to take gloves off or fiddle with wrappers in the cold and dark.

Out of curiosity, do you know when they stopped finishing/starting in Merstham? I did day one in 2010 and it ended in a school hall there.

I don’t know the exact year, I did it in 2014 and it finished in Mertsham, next time I did it in 2018 it finished in Redhill

I use a mix of strategies and play it by ear to a large extent. I take 1 bottle with High5 another plain water, I have Gu Gels and Naked bars.
On Saturday I had 1 bar and half the High 5, Sunday I had the same and used one gel.
Everything else was picked up at the checkpoints.

Suggested to the Mrs that a 6 hour loop trail race was a good one for her. Anyone done any of the races at Wendover? If we could figure out what to do with the kids, could do a 2 person relay but think the small people will get bored over that length of time.

Haven’t done it, was due to do Wendover Woods 50 last Nov but pilled out. If it’s the same 10mile, by all accounts it’s FO hilly

My wife did an event in Wendover woods. They are very hilly.

I did the parkrun in Wendover Woods. It was hilly AF. I’ve also walked around the Gruffalo Trail there, which was enjoyed by the kids.

Have run through WW on the Ridgeway - big drop offs as I recall

Any recommendations for 100km events mid July-August?

Did RTTS last year with my son and looking for something similar

What shoes would you go for when running ultra distance over hard trails & muddy fields? I’m considering Inov8 Roclite, Hoka Speedgoat, Saucony Peregrine, VJ Ultras. Actually looking at the lugs on the Roclites, I don’t think they’d work very well in the mud.

I’ve done that too, kids loved it.

I’m very close to a trigger pull but I keep entering shit I shouldn’t!

Ooh nice - liking the look of that

I’d probably use different shoes for hard trail and mud. For mud I favour grip over cushioning, for hard trail the opposite.

I used Saucony Peregrine ST (slippery terrain) on the Pilgrim at the weekend, the grip was probably overkill as it wasn’t as muddy as previous years, the standard Peregrine’s would have sufficed.

Ran in my Peregrine 10s last night. people love them but I can’t get on with them past 15-18km at all.

It can all be very personal, I didn’t get on with Hoka or Inov8 when I tried them.
