Getting tense now!
Can you imagine flying over for the race, doing all that work and missing by minutes? arrgggh ![]()
I know !! they are doing a good job clearing that finish line though .
at Commrades though the marshals just go across the line and stop people from crossing it .
I actually like that idea.
omg that last runner made me cry - incurable cancer . And she rocked it .
That was emotional for sure
Slightly OT but John Mergler was a bit of a legend in Sydney and attempted a 100/100 based in Centennial Park. It didn’t end well but he’s a FO fast IM athlete (I think he won his AG in Kona one year).
Hadn’t realised he’s moved back to Cornwall now. He’s done the BOYD at RAT. That is pure craziness!
OK. Well. So…
I’ve got 13 weeks to whip myself into shape for a 40km trail race on the French/Italian boarder. 2,500m elevation gain.
It seemed like such a good idea 20 minutes ago.
It’s got a 9:15 cut-off.
Best get training: https://traildupetitsaintbernard.fr/
The weather never seems to be great for it… October in the Alps will do that. Here’s a video from last years: Coach K-pics Run : le trail du petit Saint Bernard 2021- 40Km - YouTube
I think the things I need to focus on are:
- being less of a fat bastard
- getting as much of that sweet, sweet South London vert as I can, because 2,500m is going to kick my arse. Or, more speifically, quads.
Might need to think about a training plan. ![]()
That looks excellent & I see it’s got a live tracker. We’ll be expecting your race number nearer the time
.
2,400 vert over 40km is ‘significant’ ![]()
Yikes - that looks like a hell of a gnarly course
Start at the petit St Bernard is along the route of the TdS - weather was a lot nicer when I was up there!
Some of the trails look very narrow and exposed in places. Fingers crossed for some decent weather.
Looks like a grand day out
Looking forward to your report😀
Have you done TDS Tunster?
I have a strange desire to do it again…
2018 with my mate Tom
A lot more technical than UTMB - think someone died last year on the course following a fall
I still have nightmares about the Col du Tricot ![]()
Nice! Yes, Col du Tricot was a 'mare, but 11 years has dulled the memory somewhat. The year I did it we were routed around the Passeur de Prologan (where the chap fell) because of a storm warning; just ended up trudging up the road into the Cormet de Roseland, which added something like 8k but saved us a pretty significant climb/descent. Ahhhh… good times… back when I was ~30kg lighter than I am now ![]()
I can’t believe you let your mate beat you by a second ![]()
Any time I see a french-style squatting toilet I think about needing to take a dump in Les Contamines and them all being that style… I was a bit scared that I would be OK getting down, but unsure if I would ever make it back up.
That looks like an amazing race - if it wasn’t so exposed I would be tempted .
Loyd Purvis is doing TDS this year. He’s got a training series on his channel about it
Yep we had similar detour due to storms
Ha - didn’t even realise that - we did cross the line together. Just glad to have finished it.
Nice to be able to do TDS and then follow UTMB when we were all finished and done
So I entered Ultra Trail Cape Town yesterday , which is end of November . I then spent most of the night scaring myself on the elevation and the cut off times . 4 months to get some mountains into my legs …
Oooooo lucky you. At least it’s “at sea level” ![]()

Should be great!
