2 mins to go!

ETA: they’re still coming in. must have my timing wrong

Think there’s an hour left?

The banner on the English feed YT sire said 4pm but I assumed that was local time but maybe they meant UK time because they’re still rolling in.

Well that was crap. Wanted to see the last finishers but got a boring AF presentation instead.

One name I never heard mentioned all race was Sage Canaday. Looks like he dropped at 10hrs in?

His post on Instagram is here: Sage Canaday on Instagram: "My race at #UTMB ended at about 50-miles (80km) and 10 hours in..at Courmayeur this year. I don’t take DNFs (Did Not Finish) lightly. Going into the race I was going to “Finish no matter what…[unless there was a major health issue that could really set me back]”. Unfortunately that seemed to be the case as after about 35-miles (56km) of solid pacing and running pretty decently my lung 🫁 and chest pain ❤️‍🩹drastically slowed me down (and brought me to a stop). Given my medical history now (from last year’s pulmonary embolism), I made the tough choice to stop my race early 🥲. Again it is not something I take lightly as usually I want to “honor the race” by finishing the course. I realize my position of fortune and privilege to even be able to toe the starting line and realize many wait on a lottery for years for this opportunity to do this event. When I finished in 2017 I suffered greatly and it took 26 hours..but that was with “regular ultra pains and struggles”. Since the pulmonary embolism my lungs have truthfully not been the same and the pain with each breath is rather debilitating. I thought maybe the lower aerobic intensity of these longer races would be better for my scarred lungs…but then again maybe I’m just not as cut out for 100-milers either as even when I started mountain racing 10 years ago I’ve always been better at 50km—50mile distances. Still my legs were feeling pretty strong and my gear was dialed this year! Big thanks to crew chief @sandinypaver and support from @stephengnoza @stephaniegnoza @stephane.huser as well as all my sponsors (tagged below) and @utmbworldseries . Its been amazing to meet so many of you in the #ultrarunning community…thanks for saying hi and for your support and inspiration 🙌! Congrats to all the runners and finishers out in #Chamnoix this week! 🎉Everyone at some level has struggled and suffered through different life challenges (as well as during these grueling and beautiful distance races). We press onwards! 🏃🏻🏔🙌 Thank you sponsors: @hoka @spring_energy @camelbak @corosglobal @compressport @athletebloodtestcom @roka @averybrewingco @strava @drymaxsocks @squirrels_nut_butter #utmb #ultrarunning #run"

Picking up a couple of comments that Ben Parkes had a nasty fall and banged up his knee. I’m not on Strava but I think there might be some info there.

I think Sarah stayed to look after him but not sure.

It’ll be interesting to get the full details.

It will indeed and thanks for posting. I thought it had to be something like that when they both dropped at the same time. I ‘think’ Ben has done either UTMB or CCC before and Sarah finished Arc100, so I didn’t put it down to a lack of fortitude.

Jasmin Paris dropped out at Triente after a really bad day.

Assuming this has all his results (and it’s the correct person) the Verbier race in 2018 is the most similar: Ben PARKES - His Trail results and UTMB® Index

And Sarah did the CCC in '18. Sarah PLACE - Her Trail results and UTMB® Index

Thanks for that, I didn’t know you could list like that. I hadn’t realised Sarah had done CCC.

I looked up my list, somewhat less impressive. :joy:

I first noticed it in the spring, so may be pretty new.

The whole UTMB/IRTA thing was a right pain to set up. Different log ins and profiles for both.

I’ll give it a year before all UTMB qualifiers are UTMB races. Messick was in Chamonix, no doubt advising how to milk that cow for even more ££

I think I’m effect they are now, I’m still not clear on the setup (they need a flow chart or something with just fewer words) but as far as I understand (and that’s the caveat, I’m not sure I do!) To enter most races, you have to have at least one “Running Stone”. Each Stone gets you one entry to the ballot, and the only providers of stones are the “By UTMB” races (plus Western States).

So you while you can get points elsewhere, you have to have done one of their races to be able to enter. I think they’ll struggle to get it so only their races contribute to qualifying, but i guess the next step is that the “by UTMB” races get harder to get into, so they put on more of them, and to have a chance in the ballot you need more and more stones. In effect making theirs the only races worth doing.

I’m not sure I’m making much sense there!

The different systems and ITRA points is a bit of a mess atm, I suspect there’ll be more changes soon to streamline into the Ironman type qualification or loyalty type system.

FWIW I haven’t logged on yet but I gather we didn’t get stones from the actual races last week, so if I want to do any others I need to get them.

But, they might have processed it yet as the email I got suggested we might have something :man_shrugging:t2:

Yeah I think you’ve pretty well nailed it there. UT Snowdonia is massively popular now compared to before.

I’m sure you would have Jeff, that would be most odd if you didn’t. Did have any stones before this, or was it a deferred entry from way back?

It was deferred from 2020, had to do it this year as my ITRA points were expiring and I didn’t fancy 2 more races.

I’ll be surprised if we don’t get any stones from their flagship race, it only gets you into the lottery and not the race.

Thinking this through, the stones mean you’ve done one of their races, the ITRA points means you’ve done long distance races that are similar to the one you are entering? Eg, I had 6 points so could only do the CCC as the full needed 8, which you only get from doing things like 100 mile races.

I think that’s how it worked but I’d question the point of the ITRA points for UTMB moving forward?
I think some stones are worth more than others and that will feature in the ‘multiplier’ (or whatever they call it).

I reckon moving forward, ITRA will become more like ITU and UTMB will become more like IM.
