Trail & Ultra Running Thread

I read it that although you get more stones for longer races they are basically just extra lines in the lottery. Eg, a 100 mile race would get you 8 stones, so if you use them all you have 8 lottery tickets. But they expire after 2 years.

Rather than the ITRA points that confirm the length of the races you’ve completed.

I will admit it was a quick glance and also a comment on a group.

But yeah, I think it will change again fairly soon and similar to IM, you can only qualify for the 70.3 WC at a race of that distance, and the same for a 100 mile race.

They then offer x’00 entries to race organisers that pay them money to be part of the series.

I’d be less sceptical if they hadn’t partnered with IM.

I would be interested to know if this meshes with what other folks are seeing, but I think it works like this, and isn’t nearly as complicated as I previously assumed

UTMB, CCC and OCC

  • You’ve got to have at least one ‘Running Stone’ the more ‘Running Stones’ you have, the more entries you get into the ballot.
  • You’ve got to have a UTMB Index that relates to the category you want to enter, achieved within the prior 24 months.

This means that to get into the CCC you need a valid index in the 50k, 100k or 100 mile distances, and at least one running stone. This could be achieved by doing the North Downs Way 50 (50k index) and UltraTrail Snowdonia 25k route (1 running stone) of course it would be simpler to do the UTS50, which ticks both boxes. I don’t remember what the requirement was to get into the CCC before, so I don’t know if that’s actually easier or not.

TDS, is on a first-come first-serve basis, and you have to have a valid UTMB index at the 100k or 100M distance, no stones are required. So one could just do Race to the Stones, and be in (assuming you applied while there were still sufficient spots.) which seems easier than the previous setup.

ETA - Yeah, I’ve got quite a lot of stuff on at the moment that I can’t be arsed with, so this was a fine distraction.

In 2019 IIRC you needed 8 from 2 but somehow, I had to do Dartmoor in a Day and North Coast 50 because RttKing got downgraded after we’d already entered. Maybe it was 8 from 2 but I do remember that my DNF at RttStones and the downgraded points screwed over and I scrambled to find other races.

I wonder how long it will be before the XTri series of events (Norseman, Celtman etc - now 14 events on their circuit) get gobbled up by one of the big names??

I’d like to think they are big enough in their own right :crossed_fingers:

Essentially yes, it was 8 from 2 races if you wanted to enter the ballot for the full UTMB, or 6 from 2 for CCC.

The longer the qualifying race the more points you get.

Ah, I think I remember now. You needed 6 from 2 for CC but you couldn’t use a 2 pointer, which was a change. So I needed another 3 pointer. Maybe I entered both DiaDay and NC50 just to make sure?

I do remember being pissed off that RttKing stated 4pts then after race on the UTMB site it dropped to 3.

I watched this just now. I found it really quite moving.

I’ll give that a watch, but I (I’m sure many of us) can sympathise with the opening clip of the alarm at 530am. However, he’d have to set the real alarm at 5am,get the camera rolling, shot lined up, pretend to be asleep, etc before actually getting up!

The magic of YT  I’ve watched his other stuff, he comes across as a very likeable chap.

Lakeland 100/50 ballot is open.

Just saying…

Oooh - has been on the bucket list for a while but don’t think can do 2023

I’ve got SDW100 in June and RttStones 8th July, that’s enough craziness for one summer

Jack Kuenzle is having a crack at Kilian’s Bob Graham record today.

On pace so far but still early days

Wow, that would be impressive. KJ smashed that record! I’ve not heard of Jack Kuenzle as far as I’m aware.

Nor have I really but he broke a record in Scotland set by Finlay Wild so he must be pretty decent

He’s still ahead of Kilian’s time approaching Honister pass. Just three peaks to go then the run in to Keswick

Is he not behind the trophy? Or am I misunderstanding it?

Dale Head is the last real climb and it’s not very technical. The other two aren’t that much really, but a little technical descent before you pick up the grass track and road.

The tracker hasn’t updated for 20 minutes, that’s why it looks like he has fallen behind.

When it gets signal again somewhere up Dale Head I expect he will still be ahead
