Trail & Ultra Running Thread

I’d never heard of her but picked up the story from the news on 6 music this morning. I typed in a vague search and found it.

The sad thing is that Ultra’s rely on trust - it is not hard to cheat, most of the time you are on your own in the middle of nowhere… At least with cycling ultra’s there are the dot watchers

Plenty of dot watchers in running ultras as well but I think the scrutiny is increasing. Look at Arc100, it had a reputation for locals taking short cuts which pissed off those that did the course proper. However now it’s a WS qualifier the RDs look at the tracking like hawks. (so that’s my strategy out of the window  )

Shortcuts or racing lines?

There does seem to have been some ‘healthy debate’

Another thing I noticed is that UK/Euro ultras stick pretty much to the course. (excluding car journeys!). but in the US cutting off hairpins and taking much shorter lines seems to be an accepted thing?

I dont get it.

I mean, I totally understand why you’d get in the car. Not that bit.

The bit I don’t get is why people thought it was a good idea to run from Manchester to Liverpool

Given the medical councils draconian spite over the last few years I’d be worried for her medical license. Other similar cases recently they’ve claimed people have brought the profession into disrepute and striped their license for relatively minor/non-medical misdemeanours. Especially those without traditional British names.

Is one better than the other?

No offence to Liverpool intended.

It’s more the idea of running 50 miles… I know some of you ultra types like that sort of thing though, you strange beasts

Fully agree, why would anyone want to run an Ultra that short - I mean 50 miles, hardly worth getting out of bed for that

I am pretty low rent compared to the likes of GB, Tunster, p00key, Jeff, Matt et al. but I was out running with my mates on Monday and we were talking about some stuff coming up.

I was saying that I had a 50km on May 1st, a 74km in Cornwall on May 20 and RttS on July 8th but I really wanted to do the Serpent Trail on July 1st but only would be doing the 20km version.

The response was ‘you realise 20km of trails is quite a lot for some people?’

On the straightest, dullest trail known to man. I nearly entered the 1st edition (when it was L2M) but then remembered the marathon training I did on the TPT which nearly killed me off.

We saw her earlier in the day as we were out running/supporting. She was in the top 5 or 6 overall. Then we saw her on the tracker go off course. When you’re on the podium, why would this even cross your mind to get in a car AND THEN STILL CROSS THE FINISH LINE :exploding_head:. My friend who did the race just can’t comprehend why she crossed the finish line.

I recall the @repo, formerly of this parish did this race one year and described it as dull as f@@k

Hasn’t ever appealed to me

She’s changed her story now. Almost blaming the organisers for the farce. At what point when photos are being taken with a trophy did she think this was totally fine. It’s just incomprehensible.

yeh, but no, but yeh, but……….

she’s making herself look a complete arse rather than sucking it up, keeping quiet and moving on - and apologising personally to Mel Sykes.

The runner, who had arrived from Australia the night before, said: "I made a massive error accepting the trophy and should have handed it back.

"I was tired and jetlagged and felt sick.

“I hold my hands up, I should have handed them back and not had pictures done but I was feeling unwell and spaced out and not thinking clearly.”

Unadulterated bullshit

Rough translation. Im sorry I was caught.

Yep. Such a load of crap. If you sat part of the course in a car, you dont even cross the line!

Accidentally accept the trophy for 3rd and then accidentally publish the photo of getting the trophy for third on Strava
