A lot of good names in the mix this year
Kim Collison dropped out.
A lot of big names falling by the wayside
John Kelly
Kim Collinson
Pavel Poloncey
Among others
Lucy Gossage seems to have gone off course.
Is it a prescribed route or make your own way between checkpoints?
Make your own way I think? They’ve got some nasty weather coming.
I said at the start there will be diversions and I saw on FB a section has been re routed. Its largely covering the pennine way so you have to stay broadly on course unless officially re routed.
You need to keep to the Pennine Way unless diverted.
Potential time penalty for going off course!
Lucy (160) went across that green route just above her and has now turned south back towards the red route. Don’t know if the leader went that way too as she was already over to the west when I looked earlier this morning.
Wow, that’s a serious deviation! I think I was getting mixed up with Dragons Back, which I’m sure is ‘find your own line’.
You are allowed I think minor deviations from the Way to get food or seek shelter etc, but you have to return to the spot you left it. You also have to phone in if you are bivvying out of a checkpoint
That part is generally fairly easy to navigate? If the reservoir is in sight you’ve gone wrong.
But, in darkness, fatigued and possible bad weather it would be easy to get confused and I doubt she’d have a map open.
It is possible the track has snow on it and not obvious, but that area is actually a road in places.
Hopefully she won’t get penalised
234 hasn’t moved from the checkpoint all morning and 4th place is closing in so will be interesting to see which way they go on that section, when they get there.
I don’t think Lucy is off track, it’s a diversion they’ve all been asked to take.
I think you’re right, there is one runner on that section right now. That’s good news. ![]()
The section from cow green to high cup Nick will be brutal if forecasted snow has appeared, the forces don’t use it as a firing range because it’s populated and busy ![]()
You can get some idea of conditions using the webcams on windy.com.
It’s started to snow lightly in Middlesbrough and we’re about 70k directly from there so I reckon it could be grim, if the A66 gets closed then we’ll know it’s bad!
Had some interesting journeys on the A66 - if we made it down Sutton Bank - as we travelled from my Gran’s in Pickering back to SW Scotland back in the day.
Sutton Bank is a bit remote as well, plenty of vehicles get stranded on it during winter.
The A66 is a bit better on the very top where it’s a DC, remember it vaguely as a kid being properly twisty, slow and dangerous.
Seems to have gone quiet about it getting upgraded on the remaining single carriageway under levelling up.
